Eagle grids not working
« on: September 30, 2012, 06:50:35 pm »
I am a beginner to Eagle (started using it today) and I can not figure out how to get the grids working.  I understand that you should use a 0.1" grid for placement, which my schematic uses as well. I went into the grid options and set a 0.1" grid with a alternate of 0.05". I thought this meant that you could place a part in the middle of the grid or on the grid line. The software however, puts the object or dimension line in the middle only, and it can not be put on the line itself. Attached is a screenshot of what is going on. Am I missing something obvious here?

Your components were originally placed with whatever the old grid spacing is. Hold ctrl while moving a piece to make it snap to the grid.

The advice to use 0.1" grids is really just for the schematic editor.  It's really important in that particular case since connection points and nets are nearly always on this grid.

You can use other grids in the layout editor.

In the case of TQFP's I usually use a grid on 25mils, so you should really use a much finer grid.
