I downloaded V7. It also asks for a license, and since I don't have one, it's the free version, which also only offers 100x80mm.... :(

Presumably these forums should have all sorts of info and questions from the people who plan to continue to run v7 or older versions of EAGLE, as well as helpful suggestions for how to transition to kicad or other alternatives…

I have 7.3 “oshw edition” that does bigger and thicker boards, but only for education and os designs.  And I’m not prone to switch till I absolutely MUST.

Give KiCad a try sooner than later.

I first gave KiCad a try at v4 and went back to Eagle immediately, wasn't even half way through the bord design.
Then at one point someone told me to give KiCad v6 a try, I did one design there and never ever again thought about going back to Eagle.
I am now in a process of doing a board in v8 and man this might be the one of the shiniest examples of FOSS out there.

If you need larger board sizes than your license allows, one workaround is to use this re-scaler:

  https://github.com/mirai-computing/QEagleScaler

You can reduce the size of your project including the libraries, do your work in Eagle, and then scale it back up.  I haven't tried it myself.

I still use Eagle 7.x for maintaining existing Eagle projects, but I agree the way forward is KiCad.

2026...Last a while.
I currently have the problem that my free premium license has expired - now they have thrown me back to free and I can no longer edit my boards if they are larger than 100x80, let alone design new larger on... :P

Kicad's import for Eagle files works surprisingly well. The only issues I have had were with "cosmetic" features (graphics bitmaps) and some unusual milling contours. I tried this with a few files which had been vreated with Eagle 7.x.

BTW my licensed version of Eagle 7.7 or whatever the last version for Windows was, I actually got it to work on Linux.

Eagle's original Linux install files wasted so much time to try to install and just don't work. |O
See the complaints and lack of success on the intertoobs.
I then decided on installing the Windows version in Wine and it took less than 1/2 an hour.

Regarding Kicad, I will wait to move for a while. My paid Eagle works just fine in Windows & Linux.
With all the add-ons, custom libraries and scripts through the years, I'm staying put.

You do know there are ways to LEGALLY add size to your small files without tampering with the program?
Plenty of ways just look them up (especially Linux). All of them external to Eagle.

you have to manually install some older libraries, it's not that straightforward to install old software on new linux distributions. don't recall which libaries are needed exactly but you can figure it out using "ldd" and "strace".

is that oshw edition different than the "Make" edition ? i have the make edition and it's 6 layers euro-card (160mmx100mm) for non profit projects only. funny part is it states "make edition" and "student version" at the same time  :D

You need to install an older version of openssl (version 1.0), on my OpenSuse 15.6 workstation I used the command:
Code: [Select]
sudo zypper install libopenssl1_0_0
After that it installs and works without any problems.

Oh, and don't use that terrible wayland sh*t.

But I have heard that version of libopenssl1_0_0 was vulnerable when I was trying to install some other software which only worked with that version a while back.
I can't remember which but I got warnings of installing that version from my version of OS at that particular time.
I tried Googling what and where but AI makes Google stupider by the minute. The usual " " is ignored now with all manner of everything but what you actually wanted.
Don't get even me started on Chat GPT for anything of use.

Edited for too quick a response without actually being awake.

Not a problem because Eagle V7.xx doesn't access the internet (as far as I know). It's being used to check the license.

This has nothing to do with AI.
The search engine makes money by having you clicking on links like a mad monkey. As a result, they make less money by giving you good answers quickly. They put billions into "optimizing" their algorithms for that, while still occasionally giving some "good" answers to keep you coming back the next time.

It's the price you pay for insisting on using obsolete software. eagle probably won't do anything nefarious with that library, but who guarantees some other malware won't abuse it?

The best security is anonymity.  One of my uncles was a diamond dealer.  You can't imagine what he nonchalantly carried in his coat pockets.  No handcuffed briefcase, none of that Hollywood stuff.

Who would waste their time writing malware for and trying to exploit users of a virtually anonymous program?  BTW, I am still an Eagle user, but don't spread the word..

Unless some other programs are linked with libopenssl1_0_0 it shouldn't be much of an issue. You could move the old lib to a dedicated directory and set LD_LIBRARY_PATH before starting Eagle (hint: put everything in a small shell script). This way you can keep the old lib separate.
