'standard' footprint for female micro usb-b connetor ?
« on: July 16, 2016, 05:25:38 am »
Hi,

I am working on a something device that blinks leds through usb that I will probably opensource. Every part will be easy to source, but I am a bit worried about the usb connector : if I choose one particular reference of one manufacturer, people will need to order on a shop which stock it. It will probably mean digikey or mouser, and shipping will be more expensive than every component + the pcb (target price at $5).

Is there a generic footprint that can be used for "aliexpress" usb connectors ?

Thank you,
jaune.

Micro-B connectors come in various flavours.  The most common however looks like this...

http://sparks.gogo.co.nz/.tmp/assets/_site_/images/products/640x480/padded/640x480/000/usb-micro-b.jpg

you can see it has two flat tabs for adhering to the board, there are also two locating pins (plastic) just either side of the pins.

Here is a footprint I have drawn and used with this type (hand-soldered, hence the very long pads)

I suggest to add small vias in the four mechanical pads, for extra strength. Otherwise the pads may peel with modest force on the connector.

Don't suggest using microUSB connectors without 4 or at least 2 through hole mounts (completely paste/reflow compatible). They are very easy to rip off the board, usually together with copper layer.
