Alternative to M3x8 hex sockets (smaller head)?
« on: February 13, 2019, 07:35:03 am »
Hi all,

We're currently using these M3x8 screws for connecting our data logger end plates to the enclosure: https://bit.ly/2E7gf9E

We need something that is still standard/low cost, but with a smaller head (diameter, cone depth).

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Martin

ISO 7046 counter sunk screws with Phillips recessed drive have a slightly smaller head diameter and head height than your ISO 10642 counter sunk screw with hex drive.
Only other option would be to opt for smaller screws, e.g. M2,5 or M2.

You’re welcome.
Be aware though, that we are talking marginal differences.
I looked it up in a table and it seems I was wrong on the head height.

ISO 10642 has a 6mm head with 1,2mm height
ISO 7046 has a 5,6mm head with 1,65mm height

Almost every other counter sunk screw falls into the same category as ISO 7046
-> ISO 2009, ISO 15480

Could you elaborate on what the actual problem is with your ISO 10642 hex screws? Maybe there are other means to a solution.

We're using the screws to fasten two end plates to an extruded aluminium enclosure. We're using 2 screws per endplate.

The challenge is two-fold:
1) Our end plates are very thin, meaning that the current screws we use go slightly beyond the hole even when screwed in completely
2) The current screw head diameter means that the screws almost overlap other holes/extrusions on the end plate due to the enclosure being small

The current screws almost work - it's a small margin we need. But any alternative suggestions are welcome as well!

If you want the screw heads to be flush with the end plates, you need to countersink the plates more - and maybe even the holes in the extruded part.
Another option might be to use ISO 14580 low cylindrical head Torx screws. These are not going to be flush with the end plates, but might leave a cleaner looking part. (head diameter max. 5,32mm, height 2,4mm)
