Mentor Graphics Xpedition - getting started / tutorial
« on: May 28, 2014, 12:06:02 pm »
Hi,

I recently switched from Cadence Allegro to MentorGraphics DxDesigner/Xpedition.
Can anyone help me to getting started with Mentor's environment? May be with some practlcle guide / tutorial etc.

I'm a bit confused by the request...

This SW is extremely expensive to buy and maintain and I would assume that training is included in the price? At my place of work we have several seats of Mentor for PCB design but all of our PCB designers go on Mentor training/refresher courses even though we have been using it for many years (and Veribest for many years before that)

Also, I'm not sure if it ships with any kind of decent central library for component symbols/shapes. We have built up our own huge central library over many, many years.

As a designer, I usually use it for schematic entry and then a PCB draughtsman does the PCB layout. I 'can' drive the Expedition PCB layout tool and create fairly basic PCBs myself but I have to be honest and say that I don't like using Mentor Expedition for PCB layout.

It really is designed to be used by PCB professionals to design quite complex multilayer PCBs. There are lots and lots of 'gotchas' in this SW that will catch out a newbie and I wouldn't recommend this SW to anyone unless they do PCB design for a living at a large (and rich) company :)

So if you fit the description as a full time PCB designer then I would suggest you ask for formal training from Mentor :)
