Cheap 1.27 mm pitch "edge to ribbon" connector
« on: July 11, 2017, 01:56:18 pm »
I have been trying to find a standard 1.27 mm pitch edge connector for mounting on ribbon cable. But no luck so far.

What I am after looks like this, but smaller pitch:

I can probably get it custom made, but it needs to be cheap and it feels like one should exist already.

Actually, any small pitch "edge to cable" connector is of interest.

Do anyone have a clue where to find such connector?

Thanks!

Is it for an existing design or a new design? How reliable do you want it to be? Usually, at this pitch, you see an FFC assembly with a through hole edge connector on a stiffener.

It's a new design. It needs to be reliable, but it will not be re-seated a lot.

Is a box header or FFC not suitable for some reason?

I don't think card edge IDC connectors are a popular way to do wire to board termination these days (it restricts your choice of board finish).

Quite right. Rectangular circuits that can be V-grooved are the most economical panels to make. Edge connectors mean that you must route the board edge to suit & this costs money. Fine pitch edge connectors are not popular as the quality of the connection relies on the accuracy of the board edge routing, the board thickness, the board solder mask, the quality of the copper track finish & the board etching itself.

That seems reasonable. For now I think we will choose another solution. Thanks for the input!

There are lots of options out there, but have a look at the JST connector range (available from Digikey etc) as some of these are very low cost.
