Digikey Scheme-It for online schematic and block diagrams
« on: February 23, 2012, 03:36:22 am »
Just saw a news post about Digikey Scheme-it http://www.digikey.com/us/en/mkt/scheme-it.html
US only though!

Looks like you can come up with nice looking drawings. I'm in Australia and was able to use it so not limited to the US it seems.

Neat trick but why would anyone want to use something like this?

Seems only marginally more useful than TI's stupid online IDE.

Do Digikey's SW people really have nothing more useful to do?
Youtube channel:Taking wierd stuff apart. Very apart.
Mike's Electric Stuff: High voltage, vintage electronics etc.
Day Job: Mostly LEDs

That's funny, the comments about US only came from Digikey themselves :)

It helps to build a community around Digikey in preference to other vendors, giving them greater mind share?

Simple free schematic drawing packages are not easy to find (I know, I've looked), however ordinary the concept might seem.

It's a nice way to get an all in one solution, perhaps? You can sketch out your design with components you know Digikey will have in stock, so that when you are done you can just get a BOM and place an order. Easy! Much preferable to separately searching for components by availability and possibly having to split your order between more than one vendor.

OK, for the pro's this is no big deal. But for small or one-off projects the convenience could easily make using such a tool attractive. I think it would for me.

It is my understanding they will be adding features continiuosly to make it better and better and still keep it free to users. Digi-Key is once again leading the way serving us with new tools!

I wish Digikey or Newark would allow PCB and SPICE models to be uploaded and linked to the parts. It could be a user driven and use at your own risk thing. Sort of like having a forum thread for each part. Upload models, circuits, discuss the part, talk about alternatives parts, discuss design tricks related to the part.

Heh.  After stupidly forgetting to cross-check the Farnell-provided EAGLE library for a battery charger IC against the datasheet last week, I now treat their (and so presumably Newark's) libraries as 'use at your own risk' as well.

I dunno, we use Altium that comes with an ever expending component libraries and still end up making parts ourselves ;)

Is this really the only thread for this? I wanted a simple circuit diagram drawing utility to allow me to create diagrams digitally in order to document my electronics digitally together with any DSO waveform captures. I found this on Digikey and registered for it. I can export PNGs so I have inserted the first few I have done here for your delectation.

I have found it intuitive to use. You can edit each component individually and have the values displayed. If you found any displayed value obscured by an adjacent component then it is easy to drag the value to a more convenient location. My only objection is the apparent lack of diagonal wires hence the ancient Hindu symbol for luck in the middle of the diagram!

I like to use it as you do, for quick documentation that can be clean and almost looks like the holy grail: "publication quality" .

I did actually read the Terms & Conditions for SchemeIt and it suggested that Digikey can make use of any design created on it so you may well be waiving your copyright on it. It's best not used for commercial or research circuit development.

Good to know, thanks.
