open source schematic editor for documents
« on: November 24, 2013, 10:21:05 pm »
Does anybody know of any open source schematic editor that can create circuits with the looks of the ones found in books, datasheet etc? My goal is not to create PCBs but to export schematics as images for documents. I would like to have for example the symbols of VSs, CSs, CCVSs, CCCSs, VCVSs, VCCSs, light colours inside transistors, opamps etc.

Choose a schematic drawing package that can export the diagram, at the quality that you require, as a PDF. Then import the PDF into your document.

The only software that I know of is LaTeX and Tikz. The results are good, but, it's a type-setting programme; not a word processor.

XCircuit. EPS is the native format, you can directly include that in just about anything.

Its output looks pretty good. The one built-in library looks like crap, but there are more under "Libraries" on that website. Take your pick.

Cool! That's excactly what I was looking for! Thanks!

I just had a look at scheme-it from digikey. http://www.digikey.com/us/en/mkt/scheme-it.html
It's a nice editor (especially since there is the embedded BOM) but not suitable for my needs.

Read the tutorials. It's complicated to figure out without them (or at least, it will be very cumbersome until you see how they want you to use it).

As you mention, scheme-it is cool for the task that you are describing.

You may also want to look at http://www.docircuits.com/ and https://www.circuitlab.com/ just to see whether they fit better to your requirements.

Asymptote is a similar language, maybe more general purpose than xcircuit. I'm not surf if there's a ready-made electronics schematic library for it.
