Optical design cad ?
« on: March 29, 2015, 03:02:21 am »
I am looking for software to help me simulate optics.

basically : i have an RGB led , i want to shine this on a convex or concave material , set the translucency of that surface ( the material index ) and see how the light comes out the other end.,

the problem i am trying to solve is the following : i make a square box , 2 inch by 2 inch by 2 inch. ( or 5cm by 5 by 5. ) this box is made from milky ( diffused) plastic.

at the bottom of the box, in the centre of the bottom surface, i have a single led with a 120 degree light beam.
i want to stick a semi transparent convex or concave mirror inside the box to project part of the upward shining light onto the sides of the cube.
so i want the led at the bottom to illuminate both the top and the four sides ( the bottom can stay dark )

i should be able to warp the mirror and set different material 'indexes' and see how what the light pattern looks like on the sides.

the idea is to illuminate the each of the five side of the cube uniformly from this single point source.

i have a design here where they did this for a lightbulb. they have led's ont he bottom shining upward into a convex semi-transparant 'lens' the net effect is a uniform lightfield all around just like with a regular lightbulb.

anyone know of a piece of software where oyu can just muck about a bit drawing some simple 3d shapes and send light throught them ?

Not "simple", but: http://www.jcmwave.com
This is simple, but doesn't handle multiple elements: https://www.lhup.edu/~dsimanek/scenario/raytrace.htm

In general, any raytracing program is able to simulate lenses. The shapes are normally modeled in a 3d modeling application, but some have built-in raytracing. They aren't designed for optical engineering, so they (mostly) don't handle dispersion, diffraction, chromatic aberration...

Another one not simple either, I did play with it over 2 years ago and I don't remember the capabilities.
