Free trial of Protel 99SE
« on: February 09, 2015, 04:06:51 am »
This website is offering the original 99SE trial.

Now before you download and install it on your Windows 7 machine I have found that the trial screws up the operating system for some bazaar reason even though the blurb on this website says it works with all windows OS so go figure. Try at your own peril ! At the least it should work ok with XP ;)

For those wishing to do some complex PCB layouts or eventually get into Altium this maybe your ticket. I've used Protel 99SE for the last 10 years or so and it's managed to everything I have thrown at it including multi layered designs.  ;)

cheers

When testing or trying something new "especially" free program, always have a scratch(used once throw away) VMs ready, this saves me lots of headache for years.

Protel 99 Se doesn't run correctly on win7. you need to run it in a winxp virtual machine on win 7

as for screwing up the PC... there is no such thing as an official 'free' version of this thing. Pretty sure it's pirated and virus riddled.

No I have an original version of the trial myself including CD and instructions and I can rest assure that the version I have will screw up your OS like you have never believed. It is something to do with their trial system.

As for the non-trial version not working properly under Windows 7 if you follow these patching instructions on the exe it will fix the problem ;)

If you guys want to try something else (that's resembles the big expensive software programs), there's also Zuken CADSTAR Express , free version limited at 300 pins and 50 components : http://www.zuken.com/en/products/pcb-design/cadstar/resources/software/express

If I remember correctly this one is used a lot by Sony and other Japanese companies.

Otherwise, there's DIPTrace which has a convenient free option and KiCad which is open source.

You have to manually install Protel 99se on Windows 7 and windows 8. I agree if you run the installer it will "break" Windows 7. I had to reinstall.
Basically just copy all the .dll's and folders from an XP install and it will work! Protel 99se uses simple .ini files and not the registry so actually is pretty sand-boxed. Don't expect it to crash any less on Windows 7 / 8!

The installer for the trial must be different than the non-trial version because the non-trial installer does not cause any problems.

i think if it has to be protel99e, i'd say autotrax dex is better to learn from the start... i just dont get it the protel99e, i downloaded the trial long time ago, reinstalled just now and i still dont get it.

It is not a free trial version.
The archive downloadable from that link contains a goddamn crack.

I would sincerely suggest to remove the link from the post.

Sorry I had no idea it was a cracked version because it said trial on the website and I had not actually downloaded it myself.
