3Dconnexion Spacenavigtor 79$
i have been using it for 4 years. No drivers needed, no configuration needed. install the spacenavigator software and run. Altium recognises it, rhino recognises it , even word recognises it. ( zoom/pan)
Put the navigator left of the keyboard, moure right of the keyboard.
The navigator is so addictive that you frequently curse at programs that dont work with it !
In altium you use the navigator to dynamically zoom and pan while you are routing. so you use both navigator and mouse simultaneously. it is extremely fluid (if you have a decent graphics card with lots of ram)
All my computers at home have one connected, i even keep one in my laptop bag. Same at work.
I simply can't live without that thing.
It also works in Solidworks , everything from Autodesk, and many other 3d tools.
This thing is a direct descendent from the space navigator that silicon graphics had , so all that hi-end 3d software supports the protocol natively. Fro software that does not support 3D the 3dx software provides a transition layer . so you can pan/zoom in acrobat, google earth and lots of other programs.
This thing does not use the same command pipe like a mouse. it is really a specific 3d command pipe , similar to the mouse command pipe , that programs can hook into. it is a standardized API specifically for 3D work.
Only those programs not understanding this command pipe need the translation layer.
