Title: Why no 'Çhild board' for Cadence?
Post by: DutchGert on November 17, 2024, 04:12:24 pm
As the name says, KiCAD, Altium etc all have their own space on the forum but why not Cadence?

No demand. From a quick search, there seems to have been no Cadence-related posts for the past couple years.

Probably because there has been no dedicated section. I have seen one requested over the years but seems as if there is some bias against creating one.

Just post in the general CAD section, what is the problem.

Cadence = Orcad. Plenty of Orcad questions over the years. Probably more compared to Proteus which has its own sub-section.

This has been asked (and answered) many times before. Some people high up the management of this board really hate Cadence for some reason. Maybe their user manual book has fallen on their feet and hurt them when they were kids (it's heavy!).

Just create a separate section, what is the problem.

Lets remove all the vendor specific boards then, what's the problem?

Its just strange and inconsistent that a big vendor like Cadence does not have a place here.

I use Cadence professionally every day.

TBH they're tools I know well, I can do all the things with them that I ever need to do, so I don't have questions to ask on a forum.

Also my local distributor (Parallel Systems) has really excellent technical support, so a forum wouldn't be my first port of call if I were to get stuck anyway.

Parallel systems User guides are IMO better than Cadence own user manuals...

Same, I do as well but still, might be nice to run into some tips and tricks posted on this forum.

Anyway, for me it seems strange there is none

As do I.  Have you tried Presto layout?  I've been using it for the last 6 months and like the quick workflow of it.  However, it's missing a bunch of features that make me jump back into PCB Designer to get to work.  This is documented NOWHERE.  I've made my own long list of fixes and workarounds.  There's a whole discussion of how Presto fits into the Cadence PCB tools - but maybe that's best saved for later.

So, on topic, a dedicated subforum here would be excellent for that.  I do use the (quiet) Cadence Community Forum on their site.  Sadly, I think you have to be a licensed user to use that forum.

If the official forum is quiet, perhaps there's just not the interest (traffic-wise) to justify a dedicated space?

From what I have seen generic forums are used way more often compared to manufacturer specific forums. The generic forums are easier to access and have less cruft. Where it comes to Cadence specifically, most questions people might have are already answered. When I need to know something about Orcad capture or Allegro which I can't find in the manual, the answers are easely found either on Cadence's forum or on Youtube.

I guess it depends on the product. Just recently I went to the official forum of one (linked from the official website) to give them a piece of my mind, and just got told that I was wasting my time since it was entirely volunteer run and only sometimes do the manufacturer's staff pop in briefly.
