Thanks Dave - inspired by you thought I'd give LBRY a go and added my videos there.

A couple of comments:

* Seems to be slower than YouTube with significant buffering. Can made watching difficult.

* Videos  have a size and count limit. To quote from an email:

"Also, just so you know videos have a size and count limit. No videos larger than 2GB (or over 2hrs), and no more than the most recent 1,000 videos, will get synced."

Not an issue for most people but if your count is already approaching 1000 videos then it won't necessarily be a reliable backup in the future.

I don't believe it works like that. The 1000 video limit applies only to the initial channel sync, and not ongoing syncing.

Another thing is that you'll get a lot of emails and it's very click hungry for even trivial things (if you want to earn points). But one of them is a credit if you get referred (so put in eevblog or whoever told you about lbry - they and you get points).

Maybe it will die down after a while. But it's wise to give them a secondary email address otherwise one could get overwhelmed (there might be a function to turn off a lot of notifications - haven't checked).

If it gets too much you can always set up email filters.

For the Viewer point of view, LBRY is a piece of shit, unusable, stopping every  20 seconds for buffering, this thing will go bankrupt, take your money while they are there.

While I had subscribed, I hadn't watched any lbry videos until now.  Tried watching Dave's latest mailbag - and I didn't make it through the first minute before the buffering ticked me off something fierce.  Aside from the discontinuity it causes, it makes the total elapsed time much greater.

I know this is a single viewing attempt on my part, but it seems I'm not alone.  This will need to be resolved if they are going to be successful.

The current problem is that at present LBRY does not do any transcoding to lower format, so it simply streams the original file that's on the blockchain.
So if the content creator uploads a 1GB 5min file, then that's what people have to stream/download in order to view. If the creator compresses that same file to 100MB, then obviously it's going to require 1/10th the bandwidth per second.

I couldn't open the LBRY page nor watch any of the videos and assumed it was simply due to a lack of support for the older Chrome browser on my aging TV, but I just discovered that even when viewed on the main computer the videos start to play but then stop every few seconds to load. Also, once sorted should you add an extra shortcut link to the forum page to remind people that there are other viewing options ?

Which makes me wonder: how does this work from a copyright law perspective? Is there any information on that? With Youtube it is somewhat clear that Youtube is kind of a publishing agent/platform. LBRY OTOH seems to be a content sharing platform. How are creators making sure their content remains theirs?

LBRY are still responsible for content hosted on their own servers, i.e. lbry.tv
but content stored on users computers as parts of the LBRY blockchain system is not their problem.

Typically Dutch web hosting companies will refer you to the owner of the website. They won't take websites down because someone files a complaint; after all the web hosting company isn't liable for the content (unless it is illegal but that is a different story). Been there, done that.
