I need to get signed up for some real estate mailing lists... any suggestions of how to "filter" for listings that might be relevant to an EE type operation? Just sign up for stuff in business parks (like Dave) or light industrial districts? I'd probably need to look more at light industrial considering risks of the high power stuff we do.

Toally dependant upon your local business park. Inspect units to get a feel for various buldings and complexes within your park.

"diligence" sounds too much like "hard work" to a lot of people, sadly.

They prefer to take their chances with the lottery over diligence.

Diligence pays off.

I have a friend who has an online business and we explored the idea of getting a phone number that was a translation of the name of their business ... you know the sort of thing: 1-800-BUY-BIG.

After evaluating the constraints, the option selected was to get a mobile number.  Here in Australia, these are 10 digits long, starting with 04, leaving 8 digits for unique numbers.  This was fortuitous as their business name was 8 characters long.

Running through the translation, their name resolved to ONE mobile phone number - so the breath was held as I stepped into the fun and games of tracking this particular number down.  I did a call to that number and got cryptic messages indicating it was not active.  I then did searches, I contacted providers, all to prove the number was not in use ... and nobody could give it to me.  I was able to work out that the number I wanted was more than likely in some retailers "SIM only" stock - and that it was impossible to find out where it was.

Was I frustrated?  A little - but I made the decision to not give up, so I did the only thing I could...

I called this number at least once a week for the first six months, then a little less frequently over the next few years - but I never stopped.

Then one day I didn't get the cryptic message.  Instead the phone rang!  My heart rate jumped.  Then my call was answered!!!

I hadn't worked out a speech for this situation, even though it was what I had wanted for such a long time, but I managed to explain the situation and my interest in that particular number.  I offered him $100 plus any costs involved in transferring the number.

His response was genuine proof as to why a consistent effort - diligence - paid off....  He had only just acquired this number and hadn't shared it with more than one or two people, so giving it up at this point was not a problem.

He accepted the offer and after we navigated the transfer process (which was not friendly to two parties who did not want to share too much personal information with each other) the number is now transferred and functional as desired.


This exercise took around 4 years - but the result was worth the journey.

Life's not fair so get over it.  Prince Phillip did no "diligence" when he married and had a charmed life.  Diligence is highly over rated despite what Dave the Boy Scout says.

It always fascinates me to see so many people confuse "hard work" with "good luck".  I heard someone say something that sums it up nicely... "The harder I work, the luckier I get."

Yes, life is not easy - but then what does it owe you?  Make the effort and find your own way - and if you can't find it, then make it!

There is only one Prince Phillip, and millions of us "worker bees"...  we're not all going to be marrying into a royal family, we are not all going to win the lottery.  In fact, very few will "get lucky" in any meaningful sense.  Most people that do well, will do so by means of working towards a clear goal - diligence.

Then there are those who wait for a Princess to appear before them (climbing in through their bedroom window, after having instantly fallen madly in love with them when she saw their face out of an audience of millions at a parade).   Sure, it is a strategy for success, and it can work out big time...   but it's not the way to bet!

Anyway that new storage space would make for an ideal mechanics workshop. Having a drill press, workbench and even a small (spray) etching setup around is super handy.

Yeah, I thought maybe Perseverance. Any of these are good traits to strive for, however.

That's persistence, not diligence.

Diligence would be finding out that the number is close to a pizza company or taxi firm, or that it's blocked by various exchanges for having made thousands of junk calls, before investing a lot of time and effort to secure it.

I thought about that, but I think it's more dilligence.
Perservence is continuing on in the face of constant obstacles etc.
In this case I knew one would come up for sale eventually, so I simply did the small amount of work required constantly to ensure that I knew about it when it did. As well as getting other benefits of looking at listings of course. There were no obstacles, nothing to overcome etc.

Anyway, whether you call it stick-to-itiveness or "good things come to those who wait" or just patience, it applies to a lot of things.  I fix things and I often run into the unobtanium problem.  Many people I know immediately quit and throw things out--or in some cases pay a kings ransom for their part.  If they're worth anything, I set them aside until I either luck into the part or I have a need for the parts they have.  I have a list and I check eBay and so on every week or so.  It works--I just rounded up parts for two items I've had for over 6 months.  I also am cruising for a small industrial unit, but there's not much available at the moment here.  I hope I don't have to wait ten years!

Hi Dave,
A mate of mine had a bundle of Sinclair C5's heaped in his hedge here. I shall ask if he still has them.

We are setting up an off grid, self sufficient smallholding. It is bloody hard work but is slowly coming round. Like you say you have to be constantly looking out for things that are needed.
