Free 2+GB of store! Just delete the bloody install Xilinx log...
« on: November 19, 2018, 05:54:52 pm »
Just when you thought software developers could not give less of a shit about optimization or cleaning up after themselves, I found this gem (see attachment). Apparently, this log file is created and never removed. And never used as far as I can tell, I deleted it and Vivado seems OK with it (do this only at your own risk). It's full of useful lines, like:
2018-11-17 20:57:52,752 INFO : com.xilinx.installer.utils.s:? - WindowsDPI:Medium
2018-11-17 20:57:52,839 INFO : com.xilinx.installer.utils.s:? - LogPixels:78
2018-11-17 20:57:52,839 INFO : com.xilinx.installer.utils.s:? - LogPixels (Dec):120
2018-11-17 20:57:52,840 INFO : com.xilinx.installer.utils.s:? - WindowsDPI:Medium
Looking further at the structure of the directories, it seems the bastard did not delete the install files (another 5GB) that he downloaded. Oh, just noticed that there's another one of the buggers, under C:\Users\user\.Xilinx\xinstall ...yeah, that's 1% of my disk space (256GB SSD) made useless by logs. Keep in mind that these logs are not something that windows disk cleanup will see as useless and I'm not sure if even uninstalling Vivado would remove them... though at this point I'm pretty certain that it would probably just create another log populated with lines like:
Removed a zero.
Removed a one.

...basically, it seems to me that software developers have simply given up on the concept of optimization completely, instead assuming that everyone's got an infinite amount of freakin' storage, that's just waiting for them to dump their precious crap onto.

Game design? Have one download size, most of the space taken up by the ultra high resolution texture pack that 0.1% can actually make use of (requires the newest uber-graphics card and a 4k monitor), plus several sound language packs, regardless of what region you are in and whether you ever want to play the game in Belorussian.

Oh, then there's the preinstalled crap ware (that can't be uninstalled). Though generally small-ish in comparison with the stuff you experience with games and real applications, this caused me space problems on a phone. So, yeah, I'll whine about that as well thank you very much.

Yeah, I'm pretty annoyed.

By the way, if you want a great tool for looking at the layout of your drive, take a look at WinDirStat.
Believe it or not, pointy haired people do exist!

The cost to a hundred thousand customers upgrading their storage by another TB or so: $10,000,000
The cost to a team of developers optimizing their code for arbitrary goals: a horrible mess of bugs that delays shipment by another year: $10,000,000

You can see it's a very simple compromise for the company to make a decision about, one way or the other.  And the customer in turn, in terms of overall cost which they will eventually see, sooner or later.

Though on the subject of games, they've "discovered" "new" ways of generating revenue that -- one would hope -- tip the scales the other way.  But, don't forget: "muh shareholders"...

No huge log file for me, but I just remove 9.7GB from C:\Xilinx\Downloads\Vivado_2018.2 which didn't seem to be needed. I used the web installer as I didn't want to download the whole 5.8GB installer if I didn't need all of it. It seems that the web installer just downloads it all (and more) anyway.  :palm:

I don't have Vivado installed, but ISE and for many years with many updates (until they stopped updating it that is  ::) ). Doesn't seem to exhibit this behavior.
All new software development of this kind seems to follow the exact same path and fate though. Just look at Microchip with MPLAB X for instance, or the new ST tools.
