Xilinx DLC10 Platform USB cable
« on: February 15, 2020, 06:56:08 pm »
I bought one of these used on eBay without the flying leads that plug in to the male connector at the lower left side connector. I stupidly assumed they are .1" headers then to my dismay discover they aren't even 2mm connectors either.

Does anyone know what type of female adapter would mate with the socket? Am I out of luck not getting the flying leads with the unit?

 - still living and learning ...  :-DD  |O  ::) :palm: :-BROKE

Thanks,
Vince

Footnote: To be clear I mean the 2mm male connectors that I have don't fit in the connector on the device

The connector is a 2 mm shrouded keyed header. See Table 5, page 15 for vendor part numbers and pin assignments.
They provide off the shelf cables to fit, dimensions of the connector, and mating parts from several different manufacturers.

Possibly time to learn how to google:

I have the same adapter, and the writing on the label says 2mm.
And a 2mm cable fits. The connectors are made by AMP.

2*7 pins of these pin stripes fit on the FPGA board.

cheers, Gerhard

Hi Gerhard,

Thanks for that! The 2mm connectors I have are made by Molex and definitely don't fit. I'll look into the AMP ones. Cheers!

Methinks the boot is on the other foot.

He read what you said, found you exactly the data you need and he points you precisely to where it is, gives you a link to it and a page number FFS.

That data sheet is the first response Google gives to a query of "xilinx dlc10 connector". It does rather leave the impression that you wish to be spoon fed and didn't even try to look for yourself - hence Someone's LMGTFY response which seems entirely justifiable in this case.
Anybody got a syringe I can use to squeeze the magic smoke back into this?

Your patronizing is completely uncalled for. You have not shown that
you are armed in any way, let alone added anything of substance to
this thread. But insisting on content is probably asking to much from
a mass poster.

And yes, "Someone" 's answer was aggressive without need.

There ARE 2 mm connectors that do not fit because the plastic parts
are slightly larger. One cannot see that easily because everything
is hidden in that hole. I DID encounter problems, too.

I think it should be pointed out here whilst "pitch" has standards (by definition) connectors often don't.  Molex, Amphenol, Harwin, Samtec etc.. will have a variety of IDC 2mm connectors that may or may not be compatible with other manufacturers shrouded headers.  It's a pain having to source specific connectors, but the fact that most 0.1" shrouded headers are mostly compatible with each other is mostly just co-incidence.  This isn't the case for many other types of connectors.

It is one of those gotchas that just happens - never assume something has a generic connector, or that a specific pitch means it will be compatible with any connector of that pitch.
I'm sure Xilinx had good reason to use such a connector - even if it is to increase sales of any "custom" adapter cables.

Thanks for the insight.  I had 2mm connectors from Molex, Samtec and one other manufacturer but none of them fit. Yes, we live and lean.

Cheers,

As an ex-designer still working for one of those aforementioned connector manufacturers, I'll just throw a bit of additional information in here. If you know all this already, feel free to stop reading, this is for those less familiar with the connector industry.

2mm pitch "standard" pin headers (as shown in Gerhard_dk4xp's post) typically have a 0.5mm square pin, and that, as far as I've seen, is pretty universal for this pitch of square pin header. Mating cable connectors for discrete wires would easily fit in the hole supplied in the Xilinx box, as they are pretty much "on-pitch" for their length (2 pins per row = 4mm long, etc).

The fun comes with IDC. Because the rear fixing bar needs to latch down outside the main housing, it significantly increases the length of the connector - and there's no conformity for this length, unless there is an actual Standard it conforms to. Many moons ago we used to sell a 2mm pitch IDC, and it wasn't designed to any particular Standard and therefore did not necessarily fit in a competitor's shrouded header. BTW, we don't make 2mm IDC sockets anymore, only 1.27mm pitch, and we only guarantee a fit with our own mating latched shrouded headers, we've not tested it with the rest of the options out there.

So, I guess Xilinx have chosen a slightly more compact IDC from all the options out there, and some of the bigger ones don't fit. But I bet a discrete wire one will fit without any issues, as I bet they are 0.5mm square pins.

Lesson over, sorry can't help myself sometimes!  :blah:
