Open Source or other free el. part 3D models?
« on: July 08, 2017, 04:50:44 am »
I'm curious if there is a source of free downloadable 3D models of electronic parts.

I'm looking to use them only for some rendering experiments (not really designing actual functioning boards), but that's why download-ability is necessary.
I assume most standard formats will work fine for the purpose.

Since it's only for a little bit of playing around, I would like that they are either free and open source (or public domain or creative commons share-alike or other licenses that allow usage and modification).

After a quick search, I did run into at least one website offering parts, but it says "buy membership", so it's not suitable.

Grabcad is where I usually look (and have uploaded a few models I made there too), or the manufacturer.

if vmrl or step are ok, look for kicad 3d model libraries, there are a number released for free.

Another vote for 3dcontentcentral.

The models are all done for Solidworks but van be downloaded in other formats. Some you may have to import into your own 3D software to fettle them but genreally they are good and all you need to do is register.
