Side thought, but trying so hard to design systems that can crack robust encryption in a reasonable time is as interesting as it's psychopathic, which incidentally can also be said about quantum physics in general. ;D

Why all this excitement about quantum computers ? First because they are in principle able to crack RSA (Shor's algorithm) which is the most widely used encryption.  But RSA will be replaced by...  quantum key distribution ! Unbreakable by quantum computers.  And quantum key distribution seems now much closer to reality than quantum computers. 

Bud:
QKD already exists and commercial installations exist.
