any laptop with 10.4" 4:3 lcd?
« on: February 25, 2024, 09:01:05 pm »
so, I'm looking for a laptop with a 10.4" 4:3 LCD display.
I need to convert it into a vt220 terminal (both uart and ethernet(1)) in a mini-rack drawer, I don't need more than 800x600 pixels.

my thinkpad X61/S laptop has a 12.1" 4.3 LCD display, but it's too big (+2") for the drawer, for there are other things that need to go in.

any idea?

(1) I can use minicom@GNU/Linux, or Procomm@freeDOS

good as I need very little CPU power, but which brand/model?  :-//
the big problem is: modern laptops and netbooks are not 4:3, and frankly I do find annoying other formats for the text-console.

I would have suggested some kind of ultra portable (stuff that was called "netbooks" at the time), but even on gear from 15 years ago, the embedded display was already 16:9. Afraid you would have to get something much older yet. Maybe an old IBM Thinkpad (20 years+). They are ok but rather chunky.

Well, since the OP asked for 800x600, a 1024x600 resolution (much easier to find) and some tape :D or, if it just supports a 800x600 video mode without rescaling.

Yeah the netbooks of 15 years ago ran at 1024x600, or 1.7 width:height ratio. Not quite 16:9 which is 1.77, but close. I don't recall any that ran at 4:3 (1.33).

I still have an Asus eeePC 1000HE model on the shelf. It came with Vista but I promptly installed Linux on it back in the day. I was going to sell it so re-imaged it with the factory image before boxing it back up.

I also have a Core 2 Duo Sony VAIO 1600x1200 4:3 laptop but it's a 17", so a bit big for your use. Not to mention shipping from US to the UK would be more than it's worth. I loved that laptop back in the day, and ran several distros of Linux on it before I moved to MacBooks for my personal laptops.

Well, if the OP asked for a laptop, I guess that means they wanted something immediately usable, but otherwise, one can build something like this with a simple SBC (no need for a 8GB one) and an LCD panel+HDMI controller, the latter can be found in 4:3 on Aliexpress for relatively cheap. (The total won't of course be as a cheap as a $50 used laptop.)

yes, the final application will be similar to a rack console, so with an SBC+ panel I would have to build the frame with hinges and everything, which is extra work on the pile of things I already have to do.

In my case, the "rack console" (made with a laptop) will also include a "stream deck" next to it, that's why I need to reserve more space inside the drawer.

(rack console)

In my case, the "rack console" will include keyboard, mouse, LCD screen and a "stream deck" next to it, that's why a 10.1" is the max I can use, because I need to reserve space inside the drawer for the "stream deck".

oh, and the mobile rack will have wheels!!!   :o :o :o

kind of those who have all the things in the drawers, even the chair is made from a camper-chair, which folds and closes in a drawer, and once everything is closed, you can load the cabinet into the van using a load-platform.

A mobile scientific studio!!!

if it were a Marvel movie, it would look like the scientist's van helping Ant-man

For text consoles, possibly using a 9:16 display is even better as long as it has enough pixels along its shortest edge. Just rotate the 16:9 display 90°. Done. ;D

sure, with the laptop in an underwater tunnel, or inside a van next the rack-cabilnet, I can just twist my neck 90 degrees, or hold it straight and rotate the laptop 90 degrees, it perfectly makes sense (sarc)  :o :o :o

... maybe it makes sense with a tablet, for me 9:16 only makes sense for two things:
-1- watch videos
-2- video editing, even in panorama mode (the laptop LCD next to an external LCD), but right here, there are many problems with Apple when you don't respect the default dpi, so to avoid MacOS pixel scaling you have to choose the LCD carefully.
