Dell Precision T1600 memory
« on: August 23, 2020, 04:57:39 pm »
Hi,
I have a 2013 Dell Precision T1600 that I want to upgrade the memory of from 16Gb to 32Gb.

There are so many memory module types that have no idea how to find the right one for a general built-it-yourself PC, let alone a Dell one which usually have their own special requirements.

The only thing I know is that it has 4 slots so the maximum is 4 x 8 Gb modules to get the 32 Gb max.

Two questions:

1) Could anybody suggest a link to the correct module from a UK supplier (Amazon, Ebuyer, PC World etc) or at least the full right modules specs?

2) when I searched it some people say it can only take 16Gb max while others (more) say 32 is ok. Do anybody know which is right?

Many thanks

Expansive memory with four slots supporting up to 32GB 1333MHz ECC or non-ECC memory
Apparently it supports 32GB with later bioses.

IMHO buy used 8GB DDR3 1333MHZ or faster modules on ebay. It supports unbuffered (UDIMM) ECC and non ECC modules. Be aware that buffered (registered) modules will not work.

DDR3 is barely produced these days. Not worth the price to buy new.

to run hundreds of plugins? if so, RAM is not your only issue.

The only thing I know is that it has 4 slots so the maximum is 4 x 8 Gb modules to get the 32 Gb max.
i thought when the spec says 4 slots, 8GB max... it means total 8GB distributed on all slots, ie 4 x 2GB max.

There are so many memory module types that have no idea how to find the right one for a general built-it-yourself PC, let alone a Dell one which usually have their own special requirements.
be careful not to dig into unwanted rabbit hole. there are few people said custom building PC sux, for some reason... or worse, you probably try to upgrade a custom made MoBo made by Dell which nobody knows the spec and compatibility due to unpublished document..

2) when I searched it some people say it can only take 16Gb max while others (more) say 32 is ok. Do anybody know which is right?
a member (wraper) suggested earlier that updated bios on newer motherboard may support 32GB. we dont know which version your Dell PC is. if its earlier model you may end up buying few nice techy expensive book markers. or else if you want to upgrade the bios by yourself, hopefully there is Dell doc for that and you will not brick it like... https://www.eevblog.com/forum/repair/dell-precision-m6500-bricked-vbios/?topicseen

1) Could anybody suggest a link to the correct module from a UK supplier (Amazon, Ebuyer, PC World etc) or at least the full right modules specs?
usually RAM slots are in pairs, each pair needs identical RAM spec and size. safer bet to add another 16GB to the existing 16GB currently installed is to find the same model as the currently installed model brand, speed, size and model number. if you cant find, safer bet is to buy total 32GB identical 4 x 8GB RAM and remove the existing 16GB that are installed. otherwise (mixed RAM speed and sizes).. finger crossed.

sorry for the bitter advice. i trust i mean for your own good and precaution ;) cheers.

I like to go to the crucial website. For a Dell Precision T1600 I can find the following compatible memory

https://uk.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/dell/precision-workstation-t1600#memory

You can use that as the basis for your search on ebay ;)
Good Luck.
