in favor of thin dumb locked (by firmware) devices...

220€/yr for hardware + operating system + basic software + management + access from any place? Sounds like a bargain to me. Price scaling with more expensive plans is weird, though.

Before someone starts talking about privacy and freedom: this is offer for business. Companies care about privacy and freedom even less than average people do and most of them is already filled with software infringing both. Many already subscribed to a dozen Microsoft cloud services. In particular since the Covid pandemic has locked people at home.

Yep some people do have a need to have a remote machine they can access from anywhere. Working from home is a great example. The less technically inclined people also love cloud solutions that "just work"

Even for more technically inclined people things are moving out into the internet. Less and less people own movies on physical media like discs, while more and more people buy into services like Netflix that gives you a online streamed movie collection. PC and console gamers no longer buy games on physical discs, they mostly buy games in the online stores like Steam and keep there collection there, only downloading the games they actually play on that machine while the rest stay in there account ready to be installed with a click. Heck now things are going even farther in that direction with game streaming.

While there is something in having a physical copy of your media, lets be honest its more convenient keeping movies on a hard drive, letting the computer do the work of finding the movie rather than you yourself digging trough piles of media in a drawer.

The only thing i hate is being dependent on some internet service to actually use a product i bought. Sure my internet is reliable but i don't want to be even more screwed when it does go down. Also going somewhere with my laptop i might not have internet, or have internet that is so crappy that it is barely functional. If my whole PC was in the could that would turn it into a brick when there is no internet.

Not sure what the issue is here. Remote desktops running in VMs has been a thing for quite some time. Typically they were run in-house of some org; but in this case, the environment is outsourced to a third-party.

I am pretty old school... 
so I will try to put 2 cents of old school thinking  as fast as possible.

May be some folk will think that "SAS" is some pretty cool new thing? 

Well I was just totally addicted since the first time I put my hands on the PONG COIN MACHINE.. way back.. in some place at very early 70s... 

Nothing really "NEW" besides mixing my addiction for CRTs to games..
WITH THE NOVELTY OF "COIN"..  the pay per view or use..

Today I see that that same SAS as the PONGFLIX of 60s/70s.
WTF new is this thing?  Nothing nada zero new...

Across the 80s pretty much I lived the PONGFLIX fast spread and decay..
Several houses of "COIN FEE" machines..
Huge corporations owned the closed  hardware and charging the COIN FEE

Nothing new. Folks on IT innovated when putting the hardware on user hands..
so the 80s/90s consoles were a huge hype to own and use games wo/COINs !!! wtf

But seems they downgraded their brains back to PONGFLIX.
Now you have to pre-paid or put a coin to use software no longer owned or accessed...

Pretty much I will not start my day at the bench putting a COIN on my SCOPE or DMM to acces the CLOUD and SAS  PONGFLIX..

Nor I will put children sat at COIN MACHINES to learn IT.. 

Hope to get myself clear enough about the whole idea.

As we say on a regular basis. This is just kind of running in circles.
Back in the old days, you were also connecting to "big" remote computers through a terminal. It just so happens that our modern terminals can also run full-fledged OSs and applications themselves, which wasn't the case at the time. So, it was essentially a technical solution at the time. These days, it's mainly a management solution. It's not for any technical reason per se.

Anyway, this is just a service. Use it if you like. (You may not have a choice if you work for a company that's not your own.)
One of the major issues I see:
- Potential confidentiality and security issues;
- Not having any way of being "autonomous" at any point;
- Not being able to even access your data and "computers" if you have no internet access. This one is pretty serious. Shit happens.

But everyone, just do as you wish. Just don't come whining if you made the jump and things go bad.
Every approach has its risks. Pick your poison.

We care of it or we may not have it anymore as it displaces these rent models..

In other words we better choose right if that business do more harm than good for us

All of the mainstream consoles are locked down with impeding pirates as the claim for why, but we know the real reason is to lock users into their ecosystem. Same for iOS. In contrast, Android can run apps you write and many of the popular devices are even easy to root for complete control.
