A few questions about DDR5 memory
« on: February 08, 2021, 09:57:32 am »
Hello friends.
In wikipedia it says "All DDR5 DIMMs are registered": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR5_SDRAM
So server and consumer platforms will only differ by ECC? (except some high end ones use LRDIMM)
And what will happen to soldered onboard memory? They will also have to solder an additional register chip to the board?
Thank you!

Soldered memory would either need to include the registered clock driver chip or the memory controller could perform that function itself.  The registered clock driver is only absolutely required when the plug-in DIMM form factor is used.

Whether anybody will make processors with the registered clock driver built in to directly access soldered in memory is a completely different question, but they could.
