Fan header that Nvidia is using on video cards?
« on: September 22, 2020, 01:59:07 pm »
Hi there,

Please see pictures down below. I've the Quadro FX570 for CAD applications. But I was annoyed by the loud noise from the original small cooling fan. So I installed a big copper heatsink onto it.

That was some time ago, and I used the computer since without any issues.

Recently when installing another expansion card next to it the temperature got to 75 degrees C. So I decided I wanted to add some air flow over it. Anyway I don't what to engage in discussions whether 75 C is too much or not. Just accept I installed a fan to it like you see in the picture.

Currently the fan is driven by a motherboard fan header. But I would like to use the fan header on the videocard for it, because that one increases fan speed (PWM) based on the GPU temperature that is measured.

The video card uses some other style fan header. See that other picture.

My objective is to:

1) Find the crimp terminals that Nvidia used on the original fan plug.
2) Cut of the fan plug of the Noctua fan.
3) Crimp the Nvidia style crimp terminals on the 4 wire ends.
4) Install the 4 crimp terminals into the plug housing from the Nvidia fan.

I've checked some electrical specs to see if those are compatible and that looks fine.

I was looking around on Digikey to visually compare plug housings with what I have in my hands. I believe it is from TE HPI 2.0MM RECEPTACLE HOUSINGS. Very likely the TE 440129-4. I opened the datasheet and compared key dimensions with the one here. They match. Now the PCB pin header should then be TE 440054-4.

If someone can confirm the above is correct I would have no trouble to find the compatible crimp terminals. And I think crimping would be a success with my Engineer PA-09 because I can select the crimp die slot separately for the contact wires and the insulation.

soldering takes 20 mins an no crimping tools :)
and it works forever

I just faced the same problem with an expansion card last week.  My solution was to rip the plastic housing off of the connector on the board to expose the bare pins so that my chosen plug with the same pin spacing would fit.
