Your fundamental mistake is trying to use Chrome with more tabs than fits on the tab bar. It simply isn't meant for that, it's a strict plebs' browser.
I have discovered that by the time you no longer see even a single letter of each tab's name, this hog is already using well over ten gigs. It's hopeless.

If you really must, get more RAM
