Get all updates possible. There is a new release of Ubuntu, if possible upgrade to that, though some may claim messing around with that is bound to be more likely to break a system, I use Arch Linux where I pretty much update the kernel whenever I update the system.
Start doing some basic steps. Reinstall both browsers. Install a quick Ubuntu environment on a VM (virt-manager+libvirt+qemu+kvm is a good solution) and install both browsers. Does it work?
If all else fails, and you can't figure out why things are still crashing, then back up your home directory (preferably the entire environment if you have the space/time), reinstall Ubuntu, and then replace your home directory in the clean install with the one from the old one (saving 99% of user settings and files).
