firefox/chrome (on ubuntu) crashing a lot lately?
« on: August 09, 2019, 09:59:35 am »
Is it just me or has firefox/chrome (or possibly the flash?html5? library they both use) started crashing a lot lately?
with a modest  :P 10-50 tabs open I now get daily crashes - when before (May? and earlier) crashes were very rare...

ubuntu 18.04lts
chrome 76.0.3809.87 (Official Build) (64-bit)
firefox 68.0.1 (64-bit)

Get all updates possible. There is a new release of Ubuntu, if possible upgrade to that, though some may claim messing around with that is bound to be more likely to break a system, I use Arch Linux where I pretty much update the kernel whenever I update the system.

Start doing some basic steps. Reinstall both browsers. Install a quick Ubuntu environment on a VM (virt-manager+libvirt+qemu+kvm is a good solution) and install both browsers. Does it work?

If all else fails, and you can't figure out why things are still crashing, then back up your home directory (preferably the entire environment if you have the space/time), reinstall Ubuntu, and then replace your home directory in the clean install with the one from the old one (saving 99% of user settings and files).
I forget who I am sometimes, but then I remember that it's probably not worth remembering.

I use lubuntu 18.04 LTS 64 bit and both firefox and chrome.  My PCs are modest Core2Duo or AMD X2 with 4GB DRAM.

I don't have 50 tabs open, but sometimes I have 10 to 15 tabs open at the most.  So far, no problems whatsoever with either browser.  I run ublock origin and 2 other extensions.

I have 3 PCs that run this setup and they all run fine.

I update all 3 PCs daily with sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade.

How much DRAM do you have?

Hmmm, might run memtest86 for a few hours.  I am not running the latest firefox, only update when absolutely forced to.  But, I had 540 days of uninterrupted operation on my desktop recently.  I occasionally see firefox crash when looking at dodgy websites, but maybe only once a month.

I'm on Mint 19 (U 18.04) , primary OS.

I have not experienced any probs w FF (use it 95% of the time) , well not since they expired their addons certificate (a few months ago)
Nor have i experienced probs w Chromium  (Used a few times a week)

Could it be an extension , or more likely hw probs ?

/Bingo
