Lenovo hard drive has parameter incorrect message
« on: October 14, 2022, 04:32:47 pm »
any suggestions is welcome
Win 10 Lenovo ThinkCentre desktop  failed to boot
no hard drive activity light on start up.
the 1 TB hard drive is 85% to 90% full
blank screen so no video output
no USB keyboard shift lock light, its not working
but USB mouse has its red tracking light
CD DVD drive bay is working ok.

removed the Lenovo hard drive and put it in to a USB3 SATA HDD dock
plugged it into another PC to access the files , but get an unknown drive question mark!
click on it and get  drive _ parameter incorrect
then get a not responding message in windows. with the dive icon & question mark, disappearing
then reappearing as windows try's to open the drive menu.
finally I had to reboot the another PC just to get the USB port's working again |O
as the hard drive USB3 dock had disabled how the USB port's work.

any suggestions on how to access the files. from a 1 TB hard drive with a parameter incorrect message coming from it.
is this just a Lenovo  problem or a bad hard drive?

prior to the failure I had copyed over 60 GB of data OFF the hard drive to a portable HDD to free up space.
but had not deleted the data still remaining on the Lenovo hard drive.
I do not know of windows 10 generates temporary files when copying a large amount data off the HDD? if so windows may have made drive C 100% full
crashing the system.

Try a physical SATA connector and some Linux rescue disk, less likely to screw something up without the dock in between and windows doing windows things.

thanks
maybe driver issues or a virus infection
it is odd that the Lenovo motherboard fails to generate any video output, not even a setup menu?  |O
as both mouse and keyboard use the USB I do not know how to make the motherboard show a BIOS setup menu?
need more time to  :-\ :-/O

update-
looked into using Chkdsk, however before trying it , thought I would give the USB cable and the sockets a re-plugging & rerouting.

fixed the parameter incorrect error simply by re-plugging & rerouting the USB 3 from the front of the host PC case going to the external HDD hard drive dock
to a USB 3 socket on the rear of the same PC case, a USB 3 socket off the motherboard.  make all the difference, just 40cm of USB cable inside the case.
I have had this problem before. USB cable plugs ,sockets and external HDD's.  just remove the offending cable. to keep the link as short as possible!
in this case a socket on the front of the host PC was too far away from the motherboard output.  USB >:D cables

so new with the HDD working on the second PC. I recovered all the files from it ,  :-+
deleted 20% of the files in it to free up some space. just incase windows has painted its self into a corner.

as for the Lenovo thinkcentre it still has no video output
and failed to boot with its HDD was returned to it.
pulling , reseating the ram stick and repluging all the cable's inside the case failed to fix the problem.
its looking like a motherboard failure in the Lenovo.

if anybody is interested here are some images.
