vmWare - HomeLab - Replace ONLY datastore disk w. a new SSD
« on: December 20, 2020, 08:55:13 am »
I have a little Acer Revo 76 (Intel NUC lookalike) , that i use for learning vmWare (6.7) "Free Edition"
It has "only" one 2.5" Mechanical Hitachi disk in it , and there's no room for more.

I'm booting vmWare off an USB disk , and have my 4 VM's on the datastore disk.

As an early xmas present i have bought a Samsung EVO 860 SSD , and would like to replace the Hitachi with the Samsung.

The "net" suggests cloning w. ie. clonezilla , but it supports up to VMFS5 , and 6.7 uses VMFS6.

The VM's are not large , so i was thinking about "Exporting" them to a PC , and importing them later.

I don't have much experience w. ESXi , so how do i make the new "blank" Samsung available in vmWare , and will the system go crazy when booting and not being able to see the old Hitachi datastore ??

I have no problem with using SSH & CLI , i just need the commands ..

TIA
Bingo

You can login to the ESXi server from you web browser.  Type the IP address of your ESXi server and login to the ESXi dashboard.    If I remember correctly, there is a Data Resource option for you to set up the hard disk in the physical machine.

Oh wait!  I remember now.  You type the IP address of the ESXi server in your browser.  The webpage has a link to download the management console for Windows.  The installation file is in the ESXi server.  You install the management console to your PC.  Run the program and it will connect to the ESXi server.
