Looking for a way to run 1280x1024 from HDMI
« on: April 15, 2021, 09:52:09 pm »
I have 2 monitors connected: an old 19" LCD, 1280x1024 (via HDMI->DVI adapter); and a new-ish 27" IPS, 2560 x 1440 (via MiniDP->DVI cable).

These give me what I want: the 27" IPS for obvious reasons; the 19" because it's just high enough resolution to read small-ish size text and it fits nicely next to the 27" so as to not take up too much desktop area. I looked into replacing the 19" but the square-ish format works for me (I use it just for my mail client).

What I want to do is to use the computer's HDMI output (now driving the 19" display) to drive an HDMI splitter which would drive 2 HDTVs (1080i) and the 19" monitor. That doesn't work: when plugged into the splitter, the 19" monitor says "out of range", for obvious reasons. This is because when I plug the 19" monitor into the HDMI splitter all the splitter outputs change to 1280x1024 resolution (I guess that's normal: splitters default down to the lowest-resolution monitor connected).

What I want to do is to drive the splitter with HDMI at 1080 resolution which will split(!) that signal to the TVs and the 19" monitor. I guess what I need is an HDMI->DVI adapter that will take 1080 resolution (which keeps the splitter and TV's happy) while at the same time drive the 19" monitor at 1280x1024.

Does such an adapter exist? Any simple way to achieve this result?

This is a Mac mini with just 2 video outputs: MiniDP and HDMI; so no "slots" available for extra video outputs.

Thanks.

For an hdmi source  you can not drive differently many monitors unless they are in parallel,  meaning   the same desktop  will be cloned on the others monitors ...

you wont be able to have an extended desktop  say on the biggers ones  etc ... and normally the splitter will drop to the lowest resolution ....

And yes something like the previous post may work,  the computer will see and add multiple video outputs,  (Worked for me on windows)  that way  you'll be able to extend your desktop and / or have multiple screens ... usb to hdmi,  usb monitors, external pci-express card to hdmi  ...

I have an signage computer with 3 hdmi outputs, this puppy can have 3 monitors at the same time or show / split  an extended desktop on the 3 monitors, BUT  they must be identicals, and with an specialized video player i can put a different video on each hdmi output like 3 independent monitors
