MS patchday: KB5034441 fails with error 0x80070643
« on: January 10, 2024, 02:36:28 pm »
Problem:
KB5034441 fixes a BitLocker security issue and also updates the WinRE partition. In many cases the WInRE partition isn't large enough for the update (screwed up by MS).

Solution:
- KB5028997: Instructions to manually resize your partition to install the WinRE update (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/kb5028997-instructions-to-manually-resize-your-partition-to-install-the-winre-update-400faa27-9343-461c-ada9-24c8229763bf)
- Or simply use a disk partition tool to increase the WinRE partition to 1GB or so (first decrease C partition, and then increase WinRE partition).

This issue is all over the place at the moment. Well done MS! :palm:

MS published a PowerShell script:
KB5034957: Updating the WinRE partition on deployed devices to address security vulnerabilities in CVE-2024-20666 - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/kb5034957-updating-the-winre-partition-on-deployed-devices-to-address-security-vulnerabilities-in-cve-2024-20666-0190331b-1ca3-42d8-8a55-7fc406910c10

I just had to do the manual recovery partition resizing tonight on a Windows 10 VM. Didn't see the PowerShell script, but it wasn't much to it regardless.

Sweet.
Maybe they don't care so much about Windows or filesystems anymore anyway. They want to make it all in the cloud and the filesystems in there will not be anything from MS. :-DD
