Problem with non-genuine eBay Lightning cable

(1/2) > >>

Circlotron:
Looks like this one got lost in yesterday's administration mishap, so here it is again.

I go a pair of Lightning cables from eBay. They will enable charging of the phone okay but won't allow proper data transfer. On Linux I can browse the folders in the phone that contain the picture files, and see the names of the files but I cannot copy them from my phone to my computer. On a Windows 8.1 laptop I can see what looks  like an *empty* folder on the phone. A genuine Apple lightning cable works perfectly for copying files to either PC in both cases. What could be wrong?

Ed.Kloonk:
Whilst I saw the post yesterday, I have no idea since I have no Apple gear. But I did wonder if the dodgy cable works better if you try and flip the plug over. Missing/broken wires? Can you multimeter test it?

Halcyon:
Cheap and nasty cable?

Oh, okay... I thought they were simply a length of cable with suitable connectors at each end. I cut one open and inside it was almost identical to this pic. Clearly a substandard fake.
