Running Solidworks 2001 on a Windows 10 machine
« on: December 20, 2020, 08:13:33 am »
I'm trying to run an old Solidworks CAD program on my Win 10 Pro PC.

It installs ok and starts up ok .

I can open a new part drawing and place the 'line work' but as soon as I try to extrude the line work the program goes non-responsive, crashes and closes completely.

I've tried running as administrator, tried all sorts of compatibility modes from XP SP2,SP3 onward through W7.

I have an old Windows 7 machine that it will run on OK.

I've had a look for any graphics related settings in the program without success. Same with googling for a solution.

Any gurus have some suggestions as to what I might try before I give up?    :-//
Thanks

As I recall, SW 2001 to 2007(?) had a special requirement for video.  Ordinary PC video cards of that era would work with it, but not well. The required card was quite expensive, but I was able to get a used one for a reasonable price.

Hmmm that could well be the case. I guess in that case there may not be a way to run it on my new hardware. Cheers.

Try to run it in a virtual machine. VirtualBox is a good candidate and older CAD software works surprisingly well - though I have not tried SolidWorks.
