Rubbish directories?

(1/1)

PerranOak:
I have Windows 8.1 and on the C: drive a load of weird directories (screen capture attached).

Mostly, they contain just one file: MRT.exe

Some have a few files such as:
Windows6.0-KB938979-x86.cab
Windows6.0-KB938979-x86.xml
Windows6.0-KB938979-x86-pkgProperties.txt
WSUSSCAN.cab

Are these rubbish, i.e. can I delete them?

Cheers.

greenpossum:
They look like updates that were automatically downloaded and probably applied. Better to get a cleanup program that can decide what to delete. I used to use bleachbit.

Syntax Error:
They're the junk a Windows install accumulates over it's lifetime. Often these are update files and restore points. Be carefull deleting them manually as Windows Update may get out of step and kill your machine's response by trying to do a retrospective update. The only issue is these files get fragmented all over the disk map and refuse to 'defrag' because they're protected system files.

Try running the Windows Disc Cleanup Tool (built-in) which should offer a 'Windows update cleanup' option.
