Surface laptop 2 bypass bios password?
« on: March 27, 2022, 10:00:31 pm »
so my sister gave me her older Surface laptop 2 as it just been sitting on her desk for a year unused because her 6 year old son used it and every time she booted up the laptop it would ask for a bitlocker key she could not get into her old email to try and get the key so she said i could keep it

so i looked online and it was an easy fix get to the command prompt in troubleshooting the use diskpart to clear the drive and use microsoft usb creation tool to make a windows 10 usb  to install on the laptop so i did this turned off the laptop held down the volume down key and power button but it never booted off the usb just when to a screen asking for UEFI bios password

so im guessing laptop in bios is set to boot off the ssd in the laptop first but because there is now no windows 10 on it anymore it just boots to bios first and needs password

is there a way without going to bios to boot from the usb or a way i can bypass the password i asked my sister for password but she has no idea what it could be as she does not ever remember setting one

i really want to use this laptop and not just have a paperweight

Welcome to the wonderful world of M$!
Your only hope is calling M$ support and asking them to unlock the BIOS. They may or may not (you'll be discussing with someone in Islamabad or thereabouts) be able to help a little. You'll need to have all your bank account information ready, perhaps also your medical records before you get any help. Have Fun!

Boy, am I glad I've switched to Linux...

Does it have any sign of what the BIOS maker is? Pheonix, AMI, etc.? They can usually be cleared if you rewrite the EEPROM with a clean dump.

would i have to desolder a chip flash it then resolder it back on?
i have never solder anything in my life and im guessing the chip would be small so it would not be easy

i can get into a limited bios where it lets me change the date and time
and management where it says setting manger has provided you with a configuration file on a usb drive press install from usb to apply the management file i click install from usb and it says  refresh settings request failed surface laptop 2_micrsoft corporation.dfi not found

also im able to see pc information but it just tells me what model the laptop is and the system uuid and serial number

Unless someone deliberately put a BIOS password, there cannot be a password. So, try hitting enter-blank password. If there is a real BIOS password that has been set, it is very unlikely you can break-in.

Try this method: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/all/forgotten-uefi-password-surface-book-2/e63cff91-1ac8-4953-b872-c5cc92491209

Edit: There is also a thread about disconnecting the CMOS battery for a few minutes. I am not sure that works though as I tend to recall the same issue on an older laptop I had and this method not working. besides, opening it might be another hassle.

A BIOS password is different to a BitLocker key. BitLocker is Microsoft's disk encryption technology.

The reason you can't get into the BIOS probably isn't due to the BitLocker password at all, rather a feature in UEFI called "ultra fast boot" which is enabled by default on some laptops/tablets.
Basically it skips a lot of the power-on self tests messages and almost goes straight into booting the operating system. Unfortunately it also means you don't get the chance to enter the UEFI setup either.

To disable this, you need to tell Windows to reboot into a special mode so that you can access the UEFI/BIOS and disable it. Unfortunately, without the BitLocker password, you can't boot into Windows.

Your only option at this stage would be to wipe the drive and restore to a factory state. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/all/reset-without-recovery-key/19ca4aab-b260-4d70-96e2-8e5334dc76da

maybe i did not make my post clear after skipping entering the bitlocker key there was a menu and i was able to get into the command prompt and wiped the drive but booting up the laptop it just tries to boot to bios but asks for password and im unable to boot the usb

You can try removing and reinserting the CMOS battery to clear the BIOS. Though I can't guarantee anything, the password might be stored in an EEPROM or FLASH.

Also, for the love of god, use proper punctuation to make your post more readable.

What does your Linux obsessive flag-waving have to do with unlocking a BIOS?  :palm: :-DD

imho i think linux is still pure sh1t,dont know if it helps but years ago i had a 386 amstrad laptop, the only way i could get into the bios setup was by creating a hardware fault,i used to unplug the fdd that let me enter bios setup,is there anyway you can do something like that by disconecting hardware swapping memmory etc?.
