USB 3.2 BLU-RAY TL WRITER (USB POWERED)
« on: July 14, 2023, 09:07:12 pm »
Hi Folks!! I purchased a LG Writer, a while ago, and it is very inconsistant in operation.
My Laptop is USB 2.0, and the drive is verying in speed, and sometimes it is un-detectable!!
So, thinking that it was faulty, I recently purchased a other brand - and guess what, it does
exactly the same thing!!!

It says, it is downwards compatible - but is it??
I don't think my Laptop, will accept a USB 3.2 driver - mas it can't supply the current, and isn't fast enough, when they designed it.

If the unit detects it, if it is a new install, but once it reads it, it won't see it anymore!!
Also, I'm used to 'Draging and Drop' files I want to Write, and this drive, holds it in 'Files to be Written Folder'.But when I go to Write it, it says, 'The disc is not Blank", and won't do it.

Surely, both drives cant be faulty -right???

Thanks Simon.

Are you using the USB cable the drive came with? Some of them have split at the computer end, and you need to plug the split ends into two USB sockets on your computer. Otherwise the drive can't get enough power, and will act quirky. Typically they seem to read OK, but fail with the higher power requirements of writing.

Yes mate. The newer unit, has a single USB 3.0 cable, not the usual Y cable, supplied with the first unit.I noticed the second unit has an extra barrel connector, for accepting 5 Volts.
I connected it to 5 volts to a USB port, and the main 3.0 cable to the other USB port (serial comms port). It didn't improve the situation at all!! Maybe, putting the barrel connector input , to a 'beefer' seperate 'dedicated' power supply may improve it.

I've got a USB 3.0 HDD, and I have no issues with it, it works fine!!

I take it, that the last unit, should only have one speed, and not go slowly from time to time - right??

Can you tell me, what is reason, why some drives , put the files into a 'Files to be Written to Disc' folder', and others don't.Does this indicate the Disc is blank?? On other drives I've used, it writes straight aftre a Copy/Paste, or Drag & Drop. There is a rare possibility, that both drives are faulty, but I extremly doubt it.

On the first unit, I put the Power side of the ';Y' cable to a dedicated USB power Supply, and it did Stuff All!!Thanks for your Help, Tah Simon.

I tried the second unit with Single Sided CD & DVD's, and they both Read/Write perfectly. But with Dual Layer DVD's & Blu-Ray the disc's Read OK, but writing was a different story.Although, they Didn't get kept as a Tempory File, the Files to Save, apparently gave a 'Lot of Read Errors', according to the HP Laptop. This is with the Barrel Connector Input, being supplied from a Seperate PSU (USB).

Hope this helps, Tah Simon.

Hi People!!! I took the second unit back, and I think
that all of those USB Powered Blu-Ray Writers are
all the same, just not Compatible with USB 2.0.
Strange, I did make 1X100Gb Disc successfully,
with a USB 2.0, addmititly it did give a lot of errors
during the process.

Tah, Simon.
