Linux rocks if you build your own kernel images because if some driver stops working you know what to roll back :D

my issue is that Microsoft seem to change stuff on a whim and it does not always work. Google do it these days. They had a good system but they keep changing stuff just for the sake of it and often make it worse - RS style.

Yes, this is the "new" trend for software development. It comes from all the Agile bullshit, and has eventually turned into this.

It's like software development is not just a means to an end these days, but an activity all in itself. Companies do not develop software-based products anymore as they used to. They develop software they make product from. It's a major change.

So yes, this leads to a constant stream of changes, many of which being just done for the sake of developing software (the activity), and not to make the end-product better.

It’s not even that. They fired most of their QA team. It’s about someone’s ego somewhere. Always is.

For the other folk Windows did an: apt dist-upgrade. That is all.

Who typed that command and pressed enter?
Myself. Many times. In quite a few machines. Since Ubuntu 12.04. No significant flops (from 14.04 to 16.04 I had an issue with Wifi on a laptop).

On Windows?
Hoarder of 8-bit Commodore relics and 1960s Tektronix 500-series stuff. Unconventional interior decorator.

Nope. BD139 was just trying to explain in Debianspeak what Windows tried to do to the OP's machine.  :-+

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...

I installed Windows 10 LTSC as a recommendation from BravoV and it really works like a standard non-invasive Windows 7. I still don't know about its licensing terms, but it allows you to run it unlicensed for quite some time. It is the best Windows 10 I saw.

The "ordinary" people can obtain LTSC license via MSDN only, you cannot* buy just a copy. Of course, MSDN put in place some licensing caveats.

Well windows 11 is slower than 10 I can tell you that, but then at microsoft that is progress. Or maybe my pro licence has been dropped for the home one with added NOP instructions. Yes I think tat is all they do, pro has always been faster than home on the same machine for me.

More and more features keep getting added to Windows at the behest of other people than the actual user of the product...

actually windows 11 has lost features. I no longer get to decide where I have my task bar and I am forced to have a window switching experience that is far inferior to what it was before. They have gone backwards in features compared to before.

The trend is clear:  what you and I care about as users matters less and less to the team that designs Windows.

Windows has become incredibly annoying these days

I run windows in a VM. It’s never annoying, never phones home, never upgrades or patches behind my back and in fact does exactly what I want it to, when I want it to with zero issues. Of course this is only viable if you run applications that can run disconnected, but as long as you have a valid license there’s always someone who’s sorted a patch.

My 2c.
I recently started using a win 10 based tablet for data logging. I have it in airplane mode with upgrades disabled.

I’m asking it to capture voltage readings from 3x 34401A meters once every few seconds Nothing else. The CPU is running at near 100%, 2G of RAM largely consumed. I tried running TeraTerm at the same time and Win 10 could not keep up. This task could be accomplished with a 8 bit CPU running at 1MHz from 40 years ago. What the hell is Windows 10 doing?

I seriously wonder if Intel would be better off just sending some programmers to Microsoft, because apparently all the advances in microcontrollers are doing little to advance end user processing ability when you factor in the bloatware that handicaps modern GHz processors.

On top of all that pop up messages about some useless stupid annoying feature that I would never use pop up randomly it’s like a bad joke.

You will probably find that the CPU usage is a feature of your logging software. I had it with picoscope gear. never knew who's fault it was but  I was doing as you are, slow logging.

Well according to task manager only about 5-6% per instance of the logging software so ~ 15-18%
System 15%
Windows driver foundation 12%
Task manager 5%
and then a bunch of small stuff

about 65% total steady state but momentary peaks higher, with Teraterm running it hits 100% sometimes.

CPU =
The Atom x5-Z8300 is a 64-bit quad-core system on a chip introduce by Intel in early 2015. This ultra-low power SoC has a scenario design power of 2 W and operates at a base frequency of 1.44 GHz with a burst up to 1.84 GHz and supports up to 2 GB of memory.

All 4 CPU cores near 100%!

Windows defender using a fair bit even though I disabled it, it re-enabled itself.  Good thing this is my tablet I would hate to have someone else controlling my tablet.

I think the Windows stats imply all four cores maxed out as 100%. Thus a 25% load from a single-task app is topping out a single core. You might have the other cores doing nothing, but that task is at the limit and cannot go faster or use more CPU.

Perhaps that's what's happening: your logging things are single-tasking and can't take advantage of a multi-core CPU.

Win 10 (edit: Home) pulled that on me setting up a fresh install, trick is to just unplug the ethernet cable and try again.  That was weeks ago and it hasn't asked again.

My computer now randomly crashes, I have downloaded ubuntu and will be giving it a more serious try than ever. I am sick of random stuff that worked fine breaking right when i need it.
Uptime  with Ubuntu20.04 is  121 days now and counting.  Mostly due to power failures and needing to change hardware configuration.

At work I currently have one station running Ubuntu 18.04 non stop since before CV19 breakout (Oct 2019) and in the past I had quite a few running for multiple years without restart. It is a thing in *nix world.

There is this story of a linux machine that was boxed in by builders whilst running. It was on the network and ran for years but no one know where it was until some more building works were done.

Of course, I shut down my PC every day but a Windows network device has been up 114 days. Would have been more but that's when we had our last power event that shut everything down.

That's Windows 2000. I am 100% sure it will keep going until the next power cut or other catastrophic network event.

Back when we tried to use Windows 2000 for network services, we found a resource leak in the IP stack which required a weekly reboot.  Microsoft refused to fix it, and suggested installing more memory so that it would take longer to run out of resources.

On my current Windows 10 systems, I typically have to reboot every week, except for my 64GB system which lasted almost a month once.  Meanwhile my FreeBSD systems only have to be rebooted if the power fails, something breaks, or the ice machine leaks water on them.  They are much more reliable than every cable or DSL modem I have had for the past 20 years, and most consumer grade network hardware.
