Title: What did windows just try to do to me ????
Post by: MathWizard on September 19, 2021, 03:02:27 am
My PC was acting a little slow and it said win10 needed updates so eventually I restarted w/ the updates..........and I think it tried to install windows 11, with a bunch of things asking for a cell phone, or IDK, other stuff, I don't even own, like a cell phone, I don't need 1.

And after looking at this windows login /re-install/type screen for a while, I just turned off my PC. The restarted, and wow....Bill Gates,m let me go back to normal windows 10, no cell phone # required, no vaccine, no eugenics

I must prepare fresh Linux install. This is Saturday night, I don't want to have Bill Gates interrupt my BF1/4 gaming.

I can even see old Bill's POV, and thank him for the many great things windows has given me over the years, yes thanks BillG

Are you sure you don't have a virus or malware?

Mine did the same--they are getting more and more insistent that you have a Microsoft account.

Yes, it is malware.  Unfortunately it is malware that is part of Windows and distributed by Microsoft.

Ah, the joys of Microsoft's  Win10 OOBE (Out Of Box Experience)

Sometimes when Win10 does a feature update it re-runs the OOBE  'Privacy Settings Experience', presumably because it needs your permission to harvest even more data.

That's not the worst it can do: Under certain circumstances OOBE can lock up after opening a fullscreen blank black window, which is always on top so you cant switch to another task or even use task manager to close it, leaving you FUBARed unless you've either got a local admin user account on the box that doesn't need to run OOBE, so you can run task manager from that to kill the OOBE task, or if you reboot in safe mode to disable OOBE.

To disable OOBE  'Privacy Settings Experience', see https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/118840-enable-disable-privacy-settings-experience-sign-windows-10-a.html (https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/118840-enable-disable-privacy-settings-experience-sign-windows-10-a.html)

Probably trying to push MS Teams on you. On Windows 7 there is a utility to prevent the "get Windows X" upgrade process from running.

There doesn't seem to be one for preventing Win 11 on Win 10, but:

Golly, it’s the anti-Microsoft brigade - how very  1996 😁

Will you also go and purchase a “Linux users starter kit”, replete with Tux mug and biro? Heheh.

I abandoned the sinking ship when Micro$0ft started shipping DRM in default installation and locking down the OS so the users won't bypass it too easily.

That already made it clear what their proiritie$ are, although it would be a huge lie to say that back then I could see things becoming so bad in less than two decades. To some extent you can surely thank Apple and Google for that ::)

Turn off your TPM in the BIOS/UEFI and no automatic upgrade to Windows 11 should be offered.
One advantage of Microsofts stringend system requirements ;)

If you have a Home Edition running, you will need a Micosoft Account to use Windows 11. There is no way to bypass that anymore.

Oh no, the hardcore Stallman groupies are in town. 🤦‍♂️🤣

By the way, I’ve watched more RMS lectures than most sane people, and have used GNU/Linux distros as my sole OS for a few years now, and have used it on and off (A LOT) since 2002. I don’t spell “Windows” in a childish “we the underdogs!” way, I don’t walk around trying to “convert” people or tell them how “evil” Microsoft are, because they’re not - THEY ARE A BUSINESS, and they make tools. I just happen to not need their tools as much as I need my choice of OS.

I DO use Windows, and I also happen to use doors and gates, sometimes even an elevator. I use what gets the job done, and since I’m pretty nifty in bash, that keeps me here. And yeah, I’ve used the Linux subsystem for Windows for years, and know it exists. Couldn’t care less - it’s great - but I don’t need it. I also use macOS and Chrome OS. on and off.

Wake up and understand this - a screwdriver is a tool, so is a mallet. I can’t undo screws with a mallet, and I can’t effectively hammer wood with a screwdriver. Who cares? Activists, and they squander their entire existence on these empty “causes”.

A good reason why Linux isn't a solution. Does any Linux app replicate the functionality of Listary? Dopus? Those and 215 other applications, which cost an investment fortune overall, are why I remain with Windows 7. Switching to Linux would be like using a flathead screwdriver on PH2s.

Lots of people here jumping round the monolith like some monkeys.

Please attempt to understand what happened instead of trying to murder it.

You got a Windows 10 major version upgrade via windows update and it ran you through some OOBE questions. That is all.

For the other folk Windows did an: apt dist-upgrade. That is all.

Well they pushed Win10 "upgrade" though updates, they got more and more desperate and started getting more and more aggressive. Two different friends of mine had Win10 foisted on them because they had Windows 7 set to automatically install recommended updates.

And people wonder why I've had Windows Update turned off for years, frankly I trust MS about as much as I trust random malware creators, and why not, they've been using the same tactics.

I don't need to block it, I'm still on Win7 and I don't think they'll try to update that to 11. I'll transition over to Linux at the point that 7 is no longer viable. My laptop is the only Windows machine I still use, all of my secondary stuff has been Linux for several years. There is very, very little I do anymore that needs Windows and Microsoft has done virtually everything in their power to drive me away, I was once a big fan of the company and many of their products.

As always you're trading one set of problems for another.

It's not some magical place where things are amazing. It's trading corporate cost cutting and disarray (Microsoft) for a different kind of lack of attention and quality. Even the most robust and well tested distributions (RHEL) have problems after armies of people have actually been employed to patch out all the icky bits.

The key thing when being told that something is amazing is that the person telling it to you has to justify their usage and thus misrepresents the actual scale of the problems.

"Yes Linux really rocks, but I have to use the cranky desktop PC I bought 5 years ago because it doesn't work with my Intel B560 chipset yet"

"Yes Linux really rocks, but I can't open these photos I took 11 years ago because some idiot who wrote the libexif library doesn't understand memory management and my image viewer dumps core every time I open it"

"Yes Linux really rocks, apart from the 11 hours I spent recovering a hosed mdraid node with systemd and grub throwing cricket balls at your dick at every turn"

etc etc

Never change for the sake of the old thing being bad. Only change if it gives you an advantage or capability.

Yes, this is the "new" trend for software development. It comes from all the Agile bullshit, and has eventually turned into this.

It's like software development is not just a means to an end these days, but an activity all in itself. Companies do not develop software-based products anymore as they used to. They develop software they make product from. It's a major change.

So yes, this leads to a constant stream of changes, many of which being just done for the sake of developing software (the activity), and not to make the end-product better.

I installed Windows 10 LTSC as a recommendation from BravoV and it really works like a standard non-invasive Windows 7. I still don't know about its licensing terms, but it allows you to run it unlicensed for quite some time. It is the best Windows 10 I saw.

The "ordinary" people can obtain LTSC license via MSDN only, you cannot* buy just a copy. Of course, MSDN put in place some licensing caveats.

Well windows 11 is slower than 10 I can tell you that, but then at microsoft that is progress. Or maybe my pro licence has been dropped for the home one with added NOP instructions. Yes I think tat is all they do, pro has always been faster than home on the same machine for me.

Windows has become incredibly annoying these days

I run windows in a VM. It’s never annoying, never phones home, never upgrades or patches behind my back and in fact does exactly what I want it to, when I want it to with zero issues. Of course this is only viable if you run applications that can run disconnected, but as long as you have a valid license there’s always someone who’s sorted a patch.

My 2c.
I recently started using a win 10 based tablet for data logging. I have it in airplane mode with upgrades disabled.

I’m asking it to capture voltage readings from 3x 34401A meters once every few seconds Nothing else. The CPU is running at near 100%, 2G of RAM largely consumed. I tried running TeraTerm at the same time and Win 10 could not keep up. This task could be accomplished with a 8 bit CPU running at 1MHz from 40 years ago. What the hell is Windows 10 doing?

I seriously wonder if Intel would be better off just sending some programmers to Microsoft, because apparently all the advances in microcontrollers are doing little to advance end user processing ability when you factor in the bloatware that handicaps modern GHz processors.

On top of all that pop up messages about some useless stupid annoying feature that I would never use pop up randomly it’s like a bad joke.

You will probably find that the CPU usage is a feature of your logging software. I had it with picoscope gear. never knew who's fault it was but  I was doing as you are, slow logging.

Well according to task manager only about 5-6% per instance of the logging software so ~ 15-18%
System 15%
Windows driver foundation 12%
Task manager 5%
and then a bunch of small stuff

about 65% total steady state but momentary peaks higher, with Teraterm running it hits 100% sometimes.

CPU =
The Atom x5-Z8300 is a 64-bit quad-core system on a chip introduce by Intel in early 2015. This ultra-low power SoC has a scenario design power of 2 W and operates at a base frequency of 1.44 GHz with a burst up to 1.84 GHz and supports up to 2 GB of memory.

All 4 CPU cores near 100%!

Windows defender using a fair bit even though I disabled it, it re-enabled itself.  Good thing this is my tablet I would hate to have someone else controlling my tablet.
Title: Re: What did windows just try to do to me ????

I think the Windows stats imply all four cores maxed out as 100%. Thus a 25% load from a single-task app is topping out a single core. You might have the other cores doing nothing, but that task is at the limit and cannot go faster or use more CPU.

Perhaps that's what's happening: your logging things are single-tasking and can't take advantage of a multi-core CPU.

Of course, I shut down my PC every day but a Windows network device has been up 114 days. Would have been more but that's when we had our last power event that shut everything down.

That's Windows 2000. I am 100% sure it will keep going until the next power cut or other catastrophic network event.

Back when we tried to use Windows 2000 for network services, we found a resource leak in the IP stack which required a weekly reboot.  Microsoft refused to fix it, and suggested installing more memory so that it would take longer to run out of resources.

On my current Windows 10 systems, I typically have to reboot every week, except for my 64GB system which lasted almost a month once.  Meanwhile my FreeBSD systems only have to be rebooted if the power fails, something breaks, or the ice machine leaks water on them.  They are much more reliable than every cable or DSL modem I have had for the past 20 years, and most consumer grade network hardware.

I put my main workstation (Win 7/64/Ultimate) in standby instead of shutting it down every day, and it usually "lasts" for at least one month before I need to reboot it, usually for a problem with my watercooling pump very occasionally not starting upon resume (which I talked about in another thread.) So, it's rather stable.

But of course a Linux box is unbeatable for "uptime". I have Linux both on a laptop and on a small workstation box, and if I reboot them, it's for a kernel update. Since I'm on a rolling release distribution, those happen on a regular basis, but that's up to *me*.  And, I have built a NAS years ago, running CentOS, and it's on 24/7, updates requiring rebooting are pretty rare on this. Typical uptime is one year or so (rebooting due to either an update, or unexpected power loss with the UPS failing, which has happened. :) )

My Win 7 PC stays up reliably,  it normally only comes down if there is a power failure that lasts longer than the UPS can handle.

Win 10 wants to reboot frequently due to updates.  Other than that, I would have to say it is actually stable.
