windows.edb corruption issue filling the boot drive
« on: November 09, 2023, 12:26:31 pm »
Had a very oddball issue with my main workstation nearly running out of boot drive space while it normally runs about 150Gb out of 500 it got within 9Gb of full  :o

Stopped the world and went looking for what was causing it and adding up the larger directories got to about 125Gb so WTF moment for the other over 300Gb.

Some lucky Google Foo and turns out there is an odd Windows 10 bug that corrupts a hidden database file that holds the Search and Indexing results. Mine was nearly 300Gb :scared: File name 'Windows.edb'.

Putting this here as it might help others keep a look out or find it and a solution if you run into it.

Resources https://windirstat.net/ is a great solution to see what is what with your storage including this.

Before

After a Database rebuild using the tips here https://woshub.com/windows-edb-file-too-big-how-to-reduce-size/#h2_1

And back to it's more proper 150'ish Gb after it.

you can disable indexing in windows, it will slow down  searches   but save space

and the usual's culprits like :    hybernation file, swap file,  Winsxs folder  ....   windows update(s) folder

and for sure  temp folder in user and windows folder ...

you have dism commands to do a good cleanup job

and i use an crafted batch command to do manual cleanup  ....    crap cleaner  nah
