Light diffusers for dot matrix

Hi, I've got some noob questions. A friend of mine is doing a lighting project for a festival event in Sydney, and here's her funding request page [1] (not asking for $, it's not my project either). On the page, it's mentioned that they are using 1mm polyproperline as the light diffuser material for a bunch of dot matrix panels. A stroll around eBay showed the diffuser producing blurred soft edges and the rendered image shows sharp rectangular boxes. Is it actually possible to achieve the end result [2] that's being shown on the top of the page?

3m makes diffusion films with various diffusions. Not gonna be cheap.

Only other thing I can think of is increasing the distance to the diffuser...

Or finding some other film that cheap and has decent internal refraction, or maybe a mutli layer approach, thin opaque white, thicker semi opaque matte film on top.

Hey thanks for the reply. Are you saying that their proposed cost for the diffuser isn't enough?

I'm looking for general info on the topic since it looks pretty interesting. Is there some resources you'd recommend to learn about different types of diffusers and how to apply them to get different results?

Maybe check with a sign company, see what they can provide to diffuse led backlit signs?

For example, here are some of 3m's illumination diffusion films, there are other films for led panels, and edge lit diffusions.

Not sure if you can get away with a non specialized plastic film if your diffusion is too close to the leds.

oops that might be the wrong link, that might just be clear weather films.
