Request: Power Conditioner episode

While researching a UPS to protect my home theater PC and receiver, i stumbled upon AC rectifiers sold for $1000s to audiophiles/audiophools

should i get the lower end AC Conditioners models for ~$300 instead of ~$150 for a UPS battery?

There are several types of approaches... more serious, more idiotic ones.

The best one is the principle a online-USV uses, create a complete new AC. Depending on the quality of the unit this can be more or less noisy.
Other products do other things, like loading with resistors to "symetrize" (or do whatever) the AC. Reshape the AC by adding the chopped caps of the sine-wave (normally they are chopped of by the rectifiers of SPSUs), create blue light...

Anyway, if you really need such a Unit for Home-Audio, you either life (electrically wise) in a 3rd world country and will have much more serious problems or... you don't need it

Broadly speaking, a power conditioner is a UPS without batteries. I'd always use a decent UPS rather than a power conditioner.

Thanks guys. I knew i'd found the voice of reason around here. So I will just continue with my plan to add a battery back up to the HTPC and use the non-battery backed outlets for the receiver/amps.
