Wow, and the gap between up and down widens even further. I thought we were past stupidly asynchronous connections.

You guys really are moving up in the world :) That's a pretty good link for SA. When we had 1Mb down, they only gave up 128Mb up. Zim is improving now with WiMAX. Three cities have got it, but it is mentally expensive. WiMAX suits Zimbabwe because there are no cables to steal. :)
Over here though, even with 120Mb down, we still only get 3Mb up.

This is to a server a whopping 60 miles away.  :-/

Listened to a story on National Public Radio yesterday about how the US has allowed its connectivity to the Internet be monopolized by a handful of telecom companies and how the service we get is an overpriced joke.  Welcome to the New Gilded Age...

Nope.  Even in North America, we're stuck with stupidly low upload speeds.  They'll say it's because of pirating stuff, but they really don't want us creating our own content.

Hello,

I have 100Mbps symetrical ... but speedtest is using only one thread for testing. I have 100Mbps+ when using multiple threads (e.g. on my FTP server).

Need something to be hosted ? :D

That's between me and Sydney :

Wow ... 10 000 miles !

A few months ago Orange connected me to an experimental project, didn't take a screenshot, but I downloaded Skyrim from Steam at 43.2MB/s (bytes, not bits) ... unfortunately they had to disconnect me :( but they will soon offer this bandwidth at a premium, probably too expensive for me.

Thomas.

PS : and that's the Italian server we use for mshbrain.com, look at the ping ;)

Never! And soon we'll have a government designed, built and operated 'national broadband network' to bring us all the benefits of total government monopoly control. Would you like an Aussie Great Firewall to go with that fiber?

(I probably exaggerate the bit about 'government designed & operated'. I have no idea how it's being structured, as I've been deliberately looking away. There's enough horror in the news already. We can trust the government to serve their own best interests. And that sure doesn't include an uncensored public internet.)

If you start to complain about poor server performance when downloading, then you got a fast internet connection ;-)

PS: Around 13 years ago I had about 60-80Gbit/s symmetrically. Even my PC was too slow to handle that :-)

Free University internet provided in dorms.

Limited to 5Mbit/s continuous, but lets you burst to 20Mbit/s for 5 seconds or so.
Reasonably even speeds, fast ping, costs me only £3,900 a year.

why are most of the images missing in this thread ?

I started life on the internet on a 50Kbps over a GPRS phone and later upgraded to a 384Kbps connection that only worked "fast" at night.

Back in the UK any speed is good for me.

I managed to hit 50mbps down and 10mbps up on my freaking phone on LTE. Yet I'm still stuck on 10/1mbps ADSL2+ at home  ::) Too bad mobile data is so expensive haha (and mobile speeds drop dramatically when everyone starts to use ).

37Mbps down & 8Mbps up here on an FTTC line - just long (or short) enough to get 40Mbps but almost certainly not worth paying the extra for the 80/20 service. The modem was reporting something like 46/12 possible. Perhaps I'll wait until BT implement vectoring on FTTC (probably 2014 or 2015) and then look at whether it's worth paying for the upgrade.

Well, I can't complain... 100/6 anywhere on cable.

Actually only complain is 6 mbps is not enough but it's the most this ISP is willing to give atm.

Well, I just hate asymmetrical connections.

I have a small home server 6Mbps Down 512 kbps up...
The upstream band is useless if I want to get anything out of my home server while outside.

Its a 2.4 km ADSL2+ line, the SNR on the downstream is the bare minimum to keep it running at night, but I've got an SNR of 25 dB on the upstream and the ISP refuses to provide me something like 6Mbps down 1Mbps or 2 Mbps up.
That I cannot understand...

Some of the 'business grade' offerings from Telcos are at least symmetric, over copper, might be worth checking out, but probably much more expensive than home ADSL.

You might be surprised. I can get around 63/17 if I pay more, but... 40/10 is more than quick enough, really. Worlds better than 20/1!

Worlds better than 20/1!

There was a time when I'd have killed - OK, maybe not quite that far :) - for 20/1

My phone line is about 5km long, the "natural" sync was typically 1.5Mbps down and 400kbps up - however the one "good" thing about the line is that it is largely underground so there wasn't much diurnal variation in the noise figure. Thus, with very careful tweaking of the target SNRM, I was able to get about 3Mbps down.

Prior to that I had ISDN because the fastest a modem would go was about 20kbps. I suspect the line was marginal for ISDN even and some "hand picking" of pairs was involved.

Mind you I counted myself lucky to get that much out of ADSL - there are still plenty of people in the UK who have local loops much longer than mine.

Oh, believe me, I nearly went on a killing spree at BT for it. They delayed the upgrade for four years.

I'm well aware, most of them live within 20 minutes of me. :) Many of my friends are still struggling to get a reliable connection at all, let alone a fast one.

Most I've seen them offer is 25/7.  Oh wait, it looks like it's 25/10 now.  If they really do offer 50/50 on a mass scale, they're probably the first in Canada.  :-//

2 years ago in Sydney, I had the same cable speeds as Dave posted.
Since my move to southern Tasmania, I have ADSL which can reach 8Mbps on a good day.

I do a lot less computer stuff than I used to so don't really miss the speed, except when downloading a new release of Linux.  :)

mine is '100Mbps' Virgin Media...... never seen it reach 95M+  :(

This is what I'm getting in my parents house in China for 80 RMB (~8 GBP/12USD)/month atm. Half of the internet outside of China is 'harmonised (blocked)' by the authority. I have to use the VPN I set up back in the UK to gain access to FB and Youtube etc.  |O

From what I've heard - they apparently have already got the infrastructure to provide much faster (ie. >100Mbps) through cables (most homes have cable TVs these days), but they don't do it so they can make more money?? :-// Anyway the fastest broadband one can get in non-major cities is 8Mbps :< which doesn't make much sense

From the network I manage:

and from my home network:

I've had to resort to blocking certain YouTube servers at home in order to get it to fall over to backups which are much faster.   It appears that I share servers with too many other people.  My downloads are always fast,  but YouTube is dog slow if I allow them to use the servers they want me to.
