How to generate a SchLib from an existing schematic?
« on: December 01, 2016, 12:20:56 am »
In Altium there is a menu item for doing exactly this.

Can't find an equivalent process in Circuit Studio.

Can anyone advise.

Original poster here.

My intention was to create a SchLib from the active schematic in order to copy and modify a particular schematic symbol. In Altium this is how I've always done it, unless creating a schematic symbol from scratch.

Digging deeper in the CS docs, it looks as though, in Circuit Studio, you can simply copy a schematic symbol from a SchDoc and paste it into a SchLib, which would be very convenient. Will try this when I get home this evening.

See CS reference below:

Notes
•The component that you paste into the active library document can originate from either a schematic design document or another schematic library document.
•If multiple components have been copied to the clipboard from the main design in the Schematic Editor, all components in the selection will be pasted into the library document.
•If the same component is pasted into the library more than once, or if more than one new component is added to the library without renaming, the copies are distinguished by the suffix _1, _2, _3, and so on.

Yup, works.

1. Open a new SchLib in the desired project.
2. Select and copy the part of interest in your schematic within the same project.
3. Select the new SchLib in the same project, paste the new part.

Looks like the same process might work for the PCB side as well.

Would still be useful to be able to generate whole new libraries from the entire schematic. Probably a way, just don't know what it is.

Can't do it. I copied a symbol from a schematic. Paste is greyed out in the SchLib view.

Your probably trying to paste into the editor window which doesn't work.
You need to paste into the "SCH Library" side panel, in the listview of components.

That works. Thanks.

But I guess this does not work for the footprint.   :(

In Altium CS/Designer the schematic component and footprint are separate items just linked by the footprint name.
Copying the schematic component will not copy the footprint.

The technique above works equally well when copying footprints from the PCB editor to a PCB footprint library.

Just for reference the video I posted in a previous thread on capturing components from the vault demonstrates this.
