Excluding layers from auto-Routing

I would like to draw a few tracks manually at the bottom, and then tell DIPTrace to auto-route at the top. In the old version the auto-router had an option which layers of the board to use. On the new version there is a "layers setup" dialog that allows me to designate a layer as "plane" and so is excluded from auto-routing, but doing that also turns my pads into rings for some reason. Am I doing this the right way ?
