Ok so I figured out how it works #NotaTwitterUser but I don't see how it should be used for maximum benefit.

Related posts should be in a thread and if it used all over the place you'll get too many hits.

I think Dave is trying to make EEVblog into a cross between Twitter and Facebook. :popcorn:
.  That took much longer than I thought it would.

Depending on what is the intent to add this, hashtags can be beneficial or simply become screen pollution.

If Dave intends to get some statistics out of it, IME tags on a forum are very useful when there is a pre-set of them and not a "free-text form" - otherwise it can become a hodge-podge of random characters. I have seen things such as #helpmechooseanoscilloscopeplz or other very specific and impractical tags.

Obviously that creating such list can be impractical for such varied forum, although I could see at least some very useful candidates such as #TEA or #DS1054Z or #SDS1104X-E and so on.

If the intend is to help with cross-threading and related tags, I see the usefulness in, for example, the never-ending "entry level oscilloscope" threads, where someone can quickly find multiple threads related to the same subject - again, if the hashtags are somewhat "standardized" and meaningful. In this case, hashtags such as #chooseoscilloscope or #beginnerdmm could help with this.

I just hope the screen pollution is kept to a minimum.

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...

When hovering on any of the hashtags, the URL ends with something like ;<hex_string>=<long_hex_string> which seem to be the the same for all the hashtags of this page.
What are they pointing them to?

Should it clickable? Doesn't do anything for me. The first message from Dave looks like this for me in the HTML source:

So now posts will become contaminated with # and be hard to read like on Twitter.

You are not alone.
I have no clue either but I just noticed that the hash-tagged text appears differently when viewed as a guest, or when logged out.  # ::)

Clicking on #hashtags works logged in or not for me, in firefox.

But I can't think how it would be all that useful in practice, you'd have to know what to tag, and whether it's a useful post or not, in advance.

Works for me with Opera 60.

I think it is a good way to qualify content over the limits of the forum structure. The risks are really not any higher than someone opening a thread with a questionable topic title or trashing search by using excessive/misspelled keywords in a post. Or the other way around: it requires the same amount of discipline from contributors than it did before: simply don´t be a dickhead.

Does it do it in code tags:

Code: [Select]
#ifdef test
#define test

yeah

I could see at least some very useful candidates such as #TEA or #DS1054Z or #SDS1104X-E and so on.
Those examples would be useful, iff the hashtag parser is updated to not break on numbers, dashes, or underscores (and maybe not on a period followed immediately by a number).

Tags are sometimes useful, but I prefer the "list of tags on top of a thread" variant rather than hashtags. Hashtags are just #visualnoise.

Hmm.

Yeah, it's pretty bad. Looks like it just regexes on #[a-zA_Z]+.

Oh, OK....

Doesn't work for me in Chrome or Firefox when signed in.  Only works when signed out.
