Ultimatte (or similar) real-time video compositing system
« on: December 29, 2020, 07:57:55 am »
Hey Dave, if you get the opportunity, it would be super interesting to see the hardware inside an Ultimatte compositing system, vintage or modern.

Here's a vintage example: https://collections.museumsvictoria.com.au/items/394653

I saw this recent article on Hackaday that uses machine learning with GPU horsepower to accomplish excellent real-time high resolution background removal: https://hackaday.com/2020/12/22/the-world-is-your-green-screen/

Some folks in the comments were highlighting how Ultimatte was doing this decades earlier, and I'd be curious to know how much custom hardware it took to accomplish this. It would be a nice companion teardown to the $80K vintage Panasonic NLE video editor one that you did a few years ago!
