Bricked my Rigol DS4014 after firmware update
« on: April 19, 2020, 11:43:50 am »
Hi,

I tried to upgrade my Rigol DS4014 firmware today, downloaded the latest version 00.02.03.02.00 from the official website, copied it to a USB stick, started the FW upgrade procedure which went fine until about 90%, then on "FPGA upgrade" step it got stuck. Waited for about an hour, then turned the oscilloscope off. Now it only presents a black screen at boot. Any idea how this can be fixed? Tried pressing Help button many times during boot - it doesn't do anything. Thanks

I tried the FW upgrade a couple more times (by repeatedly pressing Help button during boot while USB stick is plugged in) and finally it somehow went through and now the device is working! FYI

Hmm, interesting side effect - now in the system settings the device is displayed as DS4054  :-+ !!! However all decoding options disappeared and the "Installed" options menu is greyed out. Device serial also zeroed out. Weird... I'm not going to risk another FW update though.

I think that shows that it lost its config (serial, model, etc) and rolled back to default (and Rigol is very generous with their defaults).

To regain options menu maybe you have to re-set the model type and S/N.

@Electro Detective - yep blank FAT32 USB stick

@tv84 - I'm afraid to brick it again, so will keep this as is... I have a separate logic analyzer for protocols anyway

isso, it's not over till the DSO sings

You don't want your DSO to be half baked in digital  limbo land do you?  :-//

Contact Siglent Support and ask them the exact method and file to get your DSO rocking!

You've already bricked it and it came back to life, why not try again and get it 100% operational ?   8)

Yeah if you dont have a prior backup by hacking it your only option may be to send it in to rigol

First thing i usually do is grab a copy of the os thats running if possible because i like to modify the software of my gear which both rigol and siglent make very easy

@Elasia - is there a way to make a backup of Rigol FW? Could you point to some instructions on how to do it? I wasn't able to find anything regarding this model.

For everyone's info - as I mentioned after the FW update my DS4014 model surprisingly started to get identified as DS4054. I hooked up a signal generator to see if it indeed has higher bandwidth, and to my surprise not only it displayed the signal up to 500 MHz, but it was able to capture it even up to 1200 Mhz!!   with a significant amplitude reduction though. Wow I can't believe I have such a powerful device now.
