Siglent box cat appreciation society
« on: June 17, 2021, 04:53:21 pm »
Before I even got a chance to power the scope on, my cat "G-man" was all over the box situation:

1228616-0

Very happy to see the ref signal with considerably less noise on the Siglent SDS1202X-E than the Hantek DSO2C15 (photo rather than screen dump on the Hantek because it kept corrupting my USB stick).  This was deliberately setting the trigger point low to catch the biggest noise dips.

With the Siglent, there was no noise at that level to trigger off, hence the different trigger position in the comparison.

I know this is apples/oranges comparison when one scope is twice the price of the other, but one I can work with, the other I can't.

Of course the Siglent does pick up *some* noise but it is more intelligently displayed - it appears that the longer capture points are compressed down into the screen width and where points accumulate in that pixel bucket they increase the intensity.  So noise is visible as little "hairs" but not as brightly as the rest of the signal.  The Hantek just seems to decimate the source signal to sit on-screen.  It could also do this (at the cost of processing time to update the display) with the right software, but doesn't at the moment.  It is subtle differences like this that make for a more professional experience.

I do prefer the Hantek's button layout, tactile feel, appearance and silence (though the Siglent fan is more a gentle air movement noise than a whine).  But that's about where the preferences end.

Same here....when every shipment arrives she thinks it's Christmas time investigating every box even before they are opened !
Bulk shipments can have several units in a outer box and for the small scopes it's either 2 or 4 inside and they are off limits where a growly 'Get Down' normally has her respond quickly before something soft like a baseball caps flies her way. But turn your back:

It's time for you to suggest your contacts to create a cat box product line...  with ProductID and all. Now that the chips are scarce, maybe it's not such a bad idea.     ;D

Has anyone else reported this?  SD1202X-E software 1.3.26 FPGA 2019-06-12

Was left for a couple of hours soak test this morning just displaying the ref signal, came back to find no keys responsive including the power button (had to pull power cable to reboot).  Scope remained triggering and displaying input signal.

LOL, yes a possible use for all the large empty boxes we can have at times.  :-/O
A few disappear to friends that move house but unfortunately we often get them returned where they make great drop sheets for any house renovations.  :)
No recycling skips near us and it seems a shameful waste to burn them.  :(

Yes but quite rare.
Do a Default and a soft power OFF.
ON again and continue to use it and see if it happens again. If so insist it's replaced.

So far, no repeat - it's been sat idle again and worked fine after, and I've used it for some work checking clocks and power rails at which it excels. This is the scope I needed, very happy with it.

FWIW I've only seen recent reports of freezes here however I had one with an early FW version so now every scope instrument that passes through our hands gets powered up and updated if necessary, probes assigned to channels and compensated, company sticker attached and left with settings the buyer can use straight out of the box. Simple checks but they give us confidence any buyer will have a good first experience with our products.

It is my belief this single power cycle steps around any infant freeze issues however I have no proof other than we get no reports of freezes.
Enjoy that new scope.  :)

Rigol boxes can hold just as many cats and they're much cheaper...

10 more days and it has been stable and in regular use.  You must be right, that initial lock up may be a first time setup/boot thing.  I'm very happy with it.
