Used Fluke 179, is it worth to buy?
« on: December 08, 2010, 06:21:36 am »
Hi,

I am looking for a used Fluke 179 True-rms to buy. The reason is that Fluke has made good products and I have limit budget to spend for it.
My question: is it worth for used Fluke 179 True-rms or I should buy a new, say Ampro 37XR-A true-rms?

Any suggestion will be very appreciated.

HT

I would buy a new Ampro 37XR-A because Fluke 179 does not have uA range.

The Fluke 179 is a good product, but targeted at industrial electricians, so it lacks low current ranges. It's a trade-off between quality and features: the Fluke is better quality, but the Amprobe will have more (useful) features. I would probably prefer quality, but I would probably have another meter (or uCurrent) for the uA measurements. You need at least two meters anyway ;).

Well if you have the 28II , I bet that you do not need two meters   ;)

But, it cost double price !!

Do I find useful the extra range  of  0 - 0,6 mA   or 0-6 mA ? ( I do not use uA as description, so to simplify things) ...

Well its good to be there , but its not an " must have ".

And so,  get the Fluke ... if the price is right , it looks to float at 244$ as new.

Why would you only need 1 28 II?  It can't take current and voltage readings simultaneously can it?

Get the Amprobe if you have to have something now or save your money for a Fluke that can read uA, like an 87V.  The 87V is still a great meter even if it susceptible to GSM.

Orrr get the amprobe and just start over with your savings for an additional meter :)

That's sound a bit funny as major reason about selecting one DMM over another ..   :)

Simultaneously measurements , its an complete different chapter .

The 87V is still a great meter even if it susceptible to GSM.

The 28II  it is an 87V that is not susceptible to GSM ..

But at what price point ?
The 28II  and the 87V , belongs at the aggressively priced range.

And like in the Army , there are lots of ranks in the electricians , not every one needs the top ranked DMM ( accuracy factor or extremely low mA ranges )

I've used the Fluke 179 at work and it is a pretty good general purpose DVM.  I was looking at buying one, but the lack of uA range stopped me since i'm starting to work on battery powered devices.  The capacitor and temperature features can be pretty handy though.
