Now THIS is an expensive oscilloscope!
« on: June 23, 2022, 10:04:42 pm »
I was just googling for Picoscope, and this appeared in the "Sponsored" section above the actual search results. https://www.processcontrolexperts.com/Tektronix/MSO68B-6-BW-10000/

At almost $200,000 that is the most expensive scope I've ever seen! Why does it cost so much?

Because it's 10 GHz, that's really exotic stuff. $200k is not all that outlandish for high dollar specialized test gear. At a former job we had a HDMI analyzer that was around $100k and it was not nearly as fancy looking as a scope. IIRC my TDS748C was around $40k in the late 90s which would be considerably more today and it's "only" 1GHz and 4 channels.

How many engineer-years do you think it took to develop? How many do you think they are going to sell?

That's your answer.

Those are rookie numbers. 110GHz 4-channel version of the  Keysight UXR-Series scope costs $1.3mil. There is probably less than 100 customers for that worldwide.

Why does it cost so much?

Two 50GSa/s ADCs @ 12 bits?  8 channels with 10GHz front ends?  64 logic channels?  FHD 15.6" screen?  The Tek name?   :)

If you still think it is expensive, price out a set of IsoVu TIVP1 differential probes for it.  At $28K each, a set of 8 will cost more than the scope.

A 3.5 digit 4.5 digit 5 digit 5.5 digit 6.5 digit 7.5 digit DMM is good enough for most people.

Except that was a "joke"

I believe you don't appreciate the engineering effort that went into the design of it.

so you know, don't perpetuate the lies?

Was it more than $200,000 or not?

So how is your post in context of a joke? Its not. The video is a "joke" (apparently, not clear at all) and you made zero suggestion of joke.

Guys, please knock it off. It was tongue in cheek and not serious. :palm:

At almost $200,000 that is the most expensive scope I've ever seen! Why does it cost so much?
As others have said, such prices are not unheard on the scientific markets. The R&D, materials and the very specific group of users exert enormous pressure on the manufacturer to recover the costs in the early life of such equipment. Over the years the technology catches up and tends to push the prices down (case of the TDS784 mentioned above).

At work I have been using turn-of-the-century VNAs that were absolutely above anything I would have imagined using back then - on par of whst you mentioned. Nowadays they are hauled around the lab as any other equipment and some even scoff at their older Windows 2000 OSes. I love them and bring an air of nostalgia to me...

For the 110GHz 4ch version, yeah, probably. But PCIe Gen 5 compliance testing requires a 50GHz scope, and Gen 6 is coming soon. If you go with a Keysight scope, they'll just tell you to buy an UXR.

Have you factored in the 6% eevblog discount? :)

FWIW, the “edu” price is about $28,000 less… then you subtract the 6% eevblog discount at tequipment.com :)

It was an April Fools joke, and the very best ones are not clear until the end, in order to get maximum face-palmage from the audience. It was a pretty good one, along with Big Clive's radioactive MRE...

When I saw the topic I expected to find a scope that combusted and burnt the lab down...
Now I'm disappointed with the 200k price tag.

More like a $20k scope with feature amputation removed...
But then it's still a toy for for most people who don't need the features.

Like driving a sports car, could go 400km/h, but you're only allowed to drive 120km/h, so in reality it's much less trouble to have disposable junk than a $200k item on your bench/in your driveway.

what kind of thinking that 1 day out of 365 days in a year is ok to make lies?

At almost $200,000 that is the most expensive scope I've ever seen! Why does it cost so much?
so thats the reason why since dumpster is a joke, the best place to search is in ebay or other used/bid items sites, so we can get a hold on some WinXP GHz scope at 1/100x the price, even for not so long. we are willing to trade with blood in order to make (fix) it works for as long as it can get to work.
