Optical or coax?

Does not matter much, It's just a simple serial datastream and the baudrate is also in the low MHz range.
Coaxial cables are often driven by a transformer, and I've used an RS485 transceiver to drive such a transformer or as input. Just add some common sence to not overload the stuff and adjust signal levels.
